SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 594,242, dated November 23, 189'?. Application filed November 17, 1894. Serial No. 529,082. (No model.)

To all whom t may concern.'

Be it known that I, ALBERT A. FREEMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottles, which improve-V ment is fully set forth in the following speciiication and accompanying drawings.

Itis well known that bottles of certain shape or with trade-mark characteristics thereon are relilled,'thus conveying to the public the im pression that the contents of the reused bottles are the same as those originally, which may work injustice to the manufacturer, dealer, or bottler who iirst employed the bottles.

The object of my invention is to make a bottle so valuable that it will be more profitable to the owner or purchaser of a lled bottle to break it after being emptied than to retain it intact, the construction being hereinafter set forth, and pointed out in the claim.

Figure 1 represents a partial side elevation and partial section of a bottle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 represents a horizontal section on linen@ fc, Fig. l.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in `both figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates ay glass bottle, which, excepting the features of my invention applied thereto, is of usual construction. l

B designates a coin, token, or other valuable object, which in Fig. l is partly embed-- ded in the bottom of the bottle. It will now be seen that the bottle is enhanced in value, so that when it is empty in order to obtain possession of the object B it will be broken, by which act its reuseis rendered impossible.

The bottle is provided with a recess C in the outside of the bottom thereof, so as to receive the object B therein, and formed on said bottle is the rim D, which extends inwardly from the side wall of the recess and embraces the lower face of the object near the periphery thereof, by which provision the object is exposed While it is firmly held on the bottle Within said rim, it being removable by breaking the latter, as is evident, and is thus accessible.

A recess and rim, such as C D, may be formed in the side, breast, or neck ofthe bottle Without departing from my invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

As a new article of manufacture a glass bottle, having a recess in its wall provided With an inwardly-projecting rim, in combination with a coin of greater value than said bottle, held in said recess and having a portion of its outer face near its periphery engaged by said rim, the remainder of said face being uncovered, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
