ROTARY CLEARER FOR DRAWING-ROLLS OF COTTON MACHINERY.

Be it known that 1, JAMES THOMs0N,Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Pawtucket, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in R0- tary Clearers for the Drawing-Rolls of Cotton Machinery, of which the following is a specification.
In the employment of a rotary clearing-disk for removing the waste from the surface of the drawing-rolls employed in cotton machinery it is desirable to have the rotary disk readily removable for the purpose of cleaning the cloth surface of the disk, and it is also desir- 5 ing-frames to provide a recess adapted for the proper accumulation of Waste; and my invention consists in a rotary clearing-disk provided with an unyielding edge or rim and a flexible face, preferably made of cloth,which is held at its outer portion by the unyielding rim of the disk and adapted at its inner portion to yield upwardly to an accumulation of waste.
It also consists in a clearing-disk provided at its under side with a shallow recess and having a flexible or cloth face held at its outer portion in contact with the boundary edge of the said recess and loosely held at its inner o portion, whereby the said flexible face may be caused to yield upwardly to the gradual accumulation of waste until limited by the resulting contact of the flexible material with the bottom of the recess of the disk; and my invention also consists in the separable connection of the disk to the cover of the rolls or to a pivotal support adapted for upwardturning movement, whereby the disk may be conveniently removed therefrom for the purpose of cleaning the cloth face of the disk, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a detail top view showing a portion of a drawing-frame, the rolls of which are provided with my improved rotary clearer. Fig. 2 represents a section taken in the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 represents a section taken in the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4 represents a sectional view showing the cover turned to 50 its raised position for removing the clearingdisk from the cover.

'plate a of the rotary clearing-disk E is provided with a shallow concave recess a and with a flexible cloth face b, which is attached to the plate a at its edge portion or bearingrim i'and left free of attachment at its inner portion j, whereby the loose inner portion j of the cloth face I) of the'disk will be allowed at first to rest lightly in contact with the upper surface of the rolls C, and upon the gradual accumulationof the waste 0 thereon will yield into the concave recess a of the plate a, as. shown in Fig. 3, until the upward movement of the cloth is limited by contact with the bottom 0 of the recess, thus providing for a felted accumulation of waste 0' upon the cloth face 1), whereby the disk may remain for a long time in use without requiring the removal of the said waste.
The clearing-disk E is provided with the turning axis d, the said turning axis being provided with a limiting head or shoulder e and retained for rotation in the open notch f made in the bracket G, which is secured to the inner side of the cover F, the said cover being pivoted at the point h for turning movement to the raised position shown in Fig. 4, The axis 61 is adapted to pass loosely into the notch f, and the rotation of the rolls C C, upon which the disk E rests, is in such a direction, as shown by the arrow in Fig. 2, as to cause the axis 61 to be firmly retained in the open bearing notch f of the holdingbracket, and when the cover F is raised to the position shown in Fig. 4 the disk E may be readily removed in an upward direction from the bearing-notch f, the said notch being so made that upon the raising of the cover F the action of gravity upon the disk E will cause the engagement of the head 6 or shoulder of the axis 01 with the sides of the notch f to hold the disk in proper connection with the bracket.
To the arm k of the bracket G is attached the flat spring Z, to the outer end of which is secured the antifriction-roller m, adapted to bear upon the upper surface of the clearingdisk E atone side of its turning axis d, thus serving to cause the rotation of the disk by the unbalanced frictional action of the rolls 0 upon the face of the disk. The bracket G is also provided with the stop projection n, with which the lower portion of the disk E comes into engagement whenever the cover F or the pivotal support to which the bracket is attached is turned up to the position shown in Fig. 4:.
I claim as my invention 1. A -rotary clearing-disk, having an unyielding edge or rim, and a flexible face which is held at its outer portion by the rim of the disk, and adapted at its inner portion to yield upwardly to an accumulation of waste, substantially as described.
2. A rotary clearing-disk provided with a shallow recess, and a flexible covering which is held in contact with the boundary edge of the said recess, and adapted to yield to limiting contact with the bottom of the recess,.
upon the gradual accumulation of waste upon the flexible covering, substantially as described.
3. The combination of a rotary clearingdisk provided with a turning axis having a retaining head or shoulder, with a holding support adapted for pivotal movement, and having an open notch, the sides of which are adapted to form a bearing for the said turning axis and for retaining the head or shoulder of the axis upon the upward turning of the holding-support and providing for the convenient upward removal of the disk from its bearing-notch at the upward1y-turned position of the support, substantially as described.
4. The combination of the drawing-rolls and the clearing-disk provided with a turning axis having a retaining head or shoulder, with the bracket attached to a pivotal support and provided with an open notch, the sides of which are adapted to form a bearing for the said turning axis, and for retaining the head or shoulder of the axis upon the upward turning of the pivotal support of the bracket and 'the pressure-spring secured to the bracket,
and adapted to bear upon the disk at one side of its axis to hold that side of the disk in driven contact with one or more of the rolls, substantially as described.
