BOTTLEeCAP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 591,849, dated October 19, 1897.
Application filed Tune 1, 1896, Serial No. 593,801. (No model.)
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the saine.
Illy invention relates to bottle-caps.
My object is toY provide a bottle-cap of simple and cheap construction, which will comprise such improved features that, after being once applied to the bottle-neck, said cap will lock and so seal the bottle that the contents thereof can only be obtained by breaking the neck.
The foregoing object is accomplished by the employment of a bottle-cap of improved construction, as will appear more fully hereinafter, and the novel features thereof be recited in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure lis a side elevation of a modification, showing the cap removed; Fig. 2, a sectional elevation of the cap, and Fig. 3 a sectional side elevation of the complete modification; Fig. 4, a horizontal cross-section of Fig. 2.
The bottle-neck is provided with the usual iiange 3. I employ a locking-barrel 9, made of spring metal and having tapering ends 10 and ll, which rest against the flange of the neck and the bottle-body. This locking-barrel is provided with screw-threads 12 and is longitudinally slitted at 13. A tongue le is struck up from one of the edges dening the slit. The locking-barrel is notched at 15 to receive one end of a string or cord l5. I employ a cylindrical glass locking-cap 16, having inner screw-threads 17, which are adapted for engagement with the threads on the locking-barrel. This locking-cap is provided with four inner longitudinal grooves 1S, which are situated at approximately ninety degrees apart and are adapted to receive the locking-tongue 1,4.
After the bottle has been filled and corked, the locking-barrel placed in position, and the string inserted in the notch the locking-cap is screwed onto Athe locking-barrel, the operator meanwhile holding the string or cord 15 to prevent said locking-barrel from `turning. As the cap is screwed on the tongue 14 clicks into and out of the longitudinal grooves ofthe cap until, when the cap is in proper position, the tongue engages with one of the grooves. cap. The locking barrel and cap will now turn together and cannot be separated without damagingor destroying one or the other, thus preventing relling of the bottle.
The string is then cut off bythe Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is-4 l. The combination with a bottle-neck, of a barrel consisting of a screw-threaded piece o f spring material bent around the neck and having separated ends, being also provided witha tongue, and a locking-cap provided vwith grooves adapted to receive the tongue and which cap screws onto the locking-barrel.
2. The combination with a bottle-neck, of a locking-barrel located on said neck, a locking-cap adapted to engage with said barrel,
and a cord connected to the barrel and where-v by the latter may be held when the cap is being connected thereto.
3. The combination with a bottle-neck, of a screw-threaded locking-barrel located on the neck, a flexible, severable connection secured to said locking-barrel whereby the same may be prevented from turning, and a locking-cap adapted to be screwed on the lockingbarrel and sever the said connection.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscrib-
