Kentucky, have invented certain new anduseful Improvements in Portable or Knockdown Stalls, Partitions, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to portable or knockdown partitions, and is designed,primarily,to be used in the construction of stalls in railway-cars and the like.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a stall built up in accordance with my invention; Fig. 2, a perspective View of a portion of one of the posts or columns and an attached screen; Fig. 3, a perspective of one of the posts, and Figs, 4, 5, and 6 sectional views illustrating certain details of construction.
The object of my invention is to provide means whereby a stall may be readily constructed in any freight-car without loss of time, and thus insure the safe transportation of live stock.
The construction hereinafter set forth is also applicable for use in making partitions, forming bins, and the like. I
A indicates a hollow post or column preferably formed of metal pipe or tubing, open at top and bottom and provided with teeth a on its lower end. Four openings or slots B are formed in and extend longitudinally of the post, the slots terminating at each end in eyes or enlargements b. Upon the upper end of the post is fitted acap-piece 0, its up per face being squared, forming a nut c. This nut is internally threaded and receives a bolt D, provided with an upwardly-projecting point 61, either plain or formed as a screw. These posts are designed to be placed at any desired point in the car and held in a fixed position between the floor and the roof or upper framing thereof. When in the position desired the bolt D is turned up, the point d embedding itself in the woodwork and the teeth or entering the flooring.
In Fig. l of the annexed drawings I have represented a stall in the formation of which four of such posts are employed. To form the sides of the stall, a number of boards E are used, three being shown in the present instance. The ends of these boards are tapered slightly, as shown in Fig. 5, and enter the slots or openings B in the posts. The front and rear ends of the stall are also formed of similarly-shaped boards,
' To protect the stock as much as possible from injury, I secure pads F upon the inner face of the sides and ends of the stall. Each pad is provided along the lower edge and pads are placed against them, the straps I brought up over the top board, and the rings hooked over the pins J, when the straps are drawn taut and the pad securely held in its proper place.
In Fig. 1 I have shown a portion of a pad as placed upon the outside of the stall, in which position it would be in place for a stall built up alongside of that shown. The straps I should of course in such case be beneath the pad for the other stall in order that there should be no projecting buckles.
K denotes a manger, the frame of which comprises three boards L, M, and N, beveled and hinged together as shown. The board or section L is provided with two headed bolts 0, designed to enter the eyes I) and be drawn down the slots B to the desired elevation.
Eyebolts P, having arms Q secured thereto, are mounted in the slots above the manger, said arms carrying at their outer ends two fingers f, which embrace the upper edge of the board or section N, and thus. hold the manger in its completed state.
A box B may be mountedwithin the manger to feed grain when so desired.
A screen may sometimes be employed to advantage, and such a device is shown in Fig. 2. S indicates the screen, the front being provided with a headed projection designed to engage the slot of the post. The opposite face is formed with two fingers which embrace the upper edge of the board E and hold the screen in place. The screens may be placed on the sides of the stall. The form of screen shown is simply for the purpose of illustration, and it is to be understood that other forms may be employed.
Having thus described my invention, What I claim isv I. Ina portable stall the cornbinationoi the posts A provided with the longitudinal slots having enlargements or eyes at their ends for the purpose set forth, caps O, a bolt D, and the boards E, substantially as described.

3. In a portable stall the combination of the posts A provided with longitudinal slots;
means for securing said posts in place; boards E providedwith recesses upon their edges;v pins or studs mounted in said recesses; and pads provided with fastenings.substantially as described designed to engage the pins.
4. In a portable stall,the combinationfof the. posts. A provided with longitudinal slots having eyes. or enlargements. at their ends; a manger comprising thethree hinged section's Z L, M and N; bolts 0- for holding the. section V to the posts; and arms such as. Q. connected 1 to the post and the outer section of the :manger.
5. In a portable stall, the combination of the posts A provided with longitudinal slots having eyes or enlargements at their ends; a manger comprising the three hinged sections L, M and N bolts. 0 for holding the sections to the posts arms such as Q connected to the posts and the outer section of the manger; and
a box R mounted in the manger. 6.
