Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIcEw WILLIAM W. TAYLOR, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.4
IMPRovED sT|TCH|NG-oLAMP.`
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59.094, dated October 23, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM W. TAYLOR, of Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Stitching-Clamps; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot' this specification, in which- Figure l isa side view ot' my improved clamp when open, partly in section, through the line fr a', Fig. 3. Fig. 2 is a side View of the same when closed, partlyin section, through the line Fig. 3. Fig. is a horizontal sectional View of the same, taken through the line y y, Fig. 2.
Similar' letters of reference` indicate like parts.
My invention has for its object-to furnish an improved stitching-clamp; and it consists in combining a toggle-'lever and jointed bars with the jaws of the clamp in such a way that the said jaws may be both opened and closed with the feet of the operator, leaving bot-h his hands free to be used in adjusting the work.
A and B are the jaws of the clamp, which are made of the usual form, and are connected to each other at or near their middle parts by the jointed arms O, as shown in Figs. l and 2. The lower end of the jaw or leg B is inserted in the foot-block H, so as to be stationary and support the other parts of the clamp.
The other. jaw or leg, A, is a little shorter, its lower end terminating just above'the upper surface of the foot-'block H.
The lower end ofthe jaw or leg A is pivoted to the toggle-lever D.
One end of the part d1 of the toggle-lever D i; pivoted or hinged to the end of the footblock H, and the other end of said part is pivoted or hinged to the partm2 of said togglelever D.
The end d3 of the other part, d2, extends beyond the point at which the lower end of the jaw or leg A ispivoted to'it, and the end d* of said part extends beyond the point at which the v part d' is pivoted to it, so as to form rests or treadles for the feet of the operator to rest upon in operating the cla-mp.
The end h of the foot-block H is beveled oft, as shown in the drawings, so that the end d3 of the part d2 of the toggle-lever D may have space to operate in in opening the jaws of the clamp.
If desired, the jaw or leg B, at or about its middle part, may be attached to a horse, either with or vwithout the lower part of said jaw or leg being cut oil', and in this case the outer end of the part d* of the toggle-lever D should be jointed or hinged to the frame of the said horse. v
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. The combination of the toggle-lever D with the lower endvof the jaw or leg A of the clamp, and with the foot-block H or equivalent, I. substantially as herein shown and described.
2. The combination of the jointed arms O with the jaws A and B of the clamp, substantially as herein shown and described.
3. An improved stitching-clamp, formed by the combination of the jaws A and B, jointed arms O, toggle-lever D, and foot-block H, or equivalent, substantially as herein shown and described.
WM. W. TAYLOR.
