CONSTRUCTION OF BAL ANCE-WH EELS.
- SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 590,554, dated September 21, 1897.
App ication filed November 6, 1896. Serial No. 611,294. (No model.)
citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in the Construction of Balance JVheels, of which the following is a specification.
The object of myinvention is to provide a joint of the maximum strength between the segments of the rim of a balance-wheel in order to prevent theaccidental burstingof the rim when the wheel is subjected to accelerated speed; and my invention consists in providing the segments of the wheel with a lapped joint, the engaging shoulders of which extend inwardly from the periphery of the rim to its inner surface at the side of the rimsegments, whereby the maximum of strength in the rim may be secured.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a side elevation of abalance-wheel embodying my improvement, a portion of one of the rim segments being broken away. Fig. 2 represents an edge view of the same. 3 represents an inner view of one of the segments. Fig. 4 represents the lapped joint as formed with the engagement of single opposite shoulders instead of a series of shoulders, as in Fig. 2. Fig. 5 represents a detail view of a rim in which the en gagingshoulders have a radial direction, as shown by the dotted lines.
In the drawings, A represents the balancewheel; B, the hub of the wheel; 0 O, the arms bolted to the hub, andD D the rim-segments, which are bolted to the arms, with two arms to each segment.
The rim-segments D D are provided with the opposite shoulders a a a, made parallel to each other and extending from the periphery b of the rim to its inner surface a, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3. The opposite shoulders at o. a of the rim-segments may also be made in a radial direction, as shown by the dotted lines in Fig. 5, but the parallel form of construction is preferred on account of the in creased facility for planing the surfaces of the said shoulders to properly fit each other. The ends of the rim-segments are clamped together laterally by means of the bolts cZ cl, and are also secured against lateral movement by means of the keys e 6, held in the key-seats e e.
In carrying out my improvement a joint formed of single interlocked shoulders a, as shown in Fig. 4, maybe employed,but greater strength will be secured in the joint by means of a plurality of interlocked shoulders, as shown in Fig. 2, the increase of strength being proportioned to the increase in the number of shoulders a employed in the lap-joint, and the closely-fitting shoulders at a of the segments operate to resist the bursting strain caused by accelerated speed, while the bolts cl and keys 6 serve to hold the rim-segments firmly together in a lateral direction.
I claim as my invention- 1. In a balance-wheel, the rim-segments provided with the laterally-projectin g hookshoulders arranged at one side of each segment, and adapted for lateral interlocked engagement with each other, end to end and side by side, substantially as described.
2. In a balance-Wheel, the combination of the rim-segments provided with the laterallyprojecting hook-shoulders arranged at one side of each segment, and adapted forlateral interlocked engagement with each other, end to end and side by side, with the keys adapted to prevent lateral unlocking movement, substantially as described.
3. In a balance-wheel, the combination of the rim-segments provided with the laterallyprojecting hook-shoulders arranged at one side of each segment, and adapted for lateral interlocked engagement with each other, end to end and side by side, with the keys, and the transverse bolts adapted to hold the segments firmly together in their interlocked condition, substantially as described.
