IM PROVED CARPET- FASTENER.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 59,002, dated October 33, 1861i.

To all whom it may concern:

Beit known that I, ROBERT A. GAWLER, of Goncord,in Merrimack county, State ot' New Hampshire, have invented a Uarliet-Fastener; and I do hereby declare the following description and accompanying drawings are suiicient to enable any person skilled in the art or seience to which it most nearly appertains to make and use my said invention or improve ments without further invention or experinient.

This invention consists in ahook shaped like a horseshoe, inserted in a shank so as to be capable ot' motion therein, for the purpose of fastening carpets to tloors.

In the drawings, Figure l is a side elevation.

The saine letters in different drawings refer to similar parts.

A represents the shank, consisting of' any suitable and convenient metal. B represents the hook, horseshoe-shaped, as shown, with two points, b, considerably curved, yas represented, so that theymay get a firm hold upon the carpet. Said'hook is inserted in an eye in the top of the shank in such manner as to be capable of motion in a vertical plane to any required extent. The wire of which the hook is composed is bent into the form represented after being inserted in the eye of the shank. C represents the carpet.

When in use the shanks of any desired number of these instruments are to be driven into the oor of the room to be carpeted, along the edges thereof, and the hooks are to be turned back against the wall, so that their points may project upward. The edge of the carpet is then to be placed against the driven shanks, and the points of the hooks turned down into it and driven into the door, if desired. The carpet is thus tirinly secured at one side., and may be stretched to any required extent before being fastened at the other side in a similar manner. rlhe hooks may be turned from the wail instead of toward it, at pleasure, and thns the carpet be fastened upon the hooks, their points projecting up through it.

When the carpet is to be taken up, it is only' necessary to turn the hooks np ont of it, or to take it up from the hooks, as the case may bea process much more easily performed, and attended with much less injury tothe fabric, than that of extracting tacks from it. 1t is also innch easier to pnt down a carpet with these fasteners than with tacks, as the Shanks are driven when the carpet is ont of.' the Way, and `when it is pnt in position it is much less diicult to turn the points of the hooks down into it than to drive tacks.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A carpet-fastener consisting of a shank, to be driven into the floor of a room, and a hook, horseshoe-shaped, as shown, working in said shank, in the manner described.
