w-ILLIAu r. RYLANDER, or TEMPLE, TEXAS, .issIexon TO 'rn'a'nor AIR \VASIIIXG MACHINE 00., or SAME rLAon.
CLOi'HES-POUNDER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters PatentNo. 589,399, dated August 31, 1897.
Application filed mum 5,1297. satin No. 618,022. (no ads To all whom it may concern: Y
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM P. RYLANDER, a citizen of the United States, residingat Temple, in the county of Bell and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful .Improvements in Washing-Machines; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, suchas will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use thesame.
This invention relates to the class of laundry, and particularly to a clothes washer adapted to be immersed with the clothes and proper amount of hot or coldwater in a suitable washtub or other vessel ordinarily used in washing clothes.
A further object of the invention is to provide an automatic clothes washer and soaper whereby the clothes are soaped and cleansed by oneaud the same operation.
A still further'object of the invention is to providea simple, durable,'and inexpensive clothes-washer of such novel and peculiar construction that the parts thereof may be readily separated for convenience in cleansing such parts and to be packed for transportationand storing.
The invention consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and set up in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings, forming of this application, Figure 1 is an elevation of my improved soapenand washer. Fig.
7 ing a slot 4 upon opposite sides, a cap 5,
2 is a central vertical section thereof. Fig.
3 is a section of a modification.
The same numeral references denote the same parts throughout the several figuresof the drawings.
The cylinder 1 has an open bottom and a conical top 2, provided with a sleeve 3, havci an a bottom rim 6. A slidable collar 7 is secured upon the sleeve 3 by a pin 8, extending through the said slots 4. A spiral spring 9 surrounds the sleeve 3, one end of which engages the rim (3 and the other end the cap 5. A red 10, having a hooked engagement with the pin 8, carries a handle 11, or a s'uitable le'ver'may be attached. A plunger 12, having an open bottom, is provided with a flange and a conical top 14. Extending upward from the apex of the cone-top 14. is a hollow bar or tube 15, which reaches to the handle 11 and is provided upon opposite sides with a slot 16, similar to and registering with the slot 4. The rod 10 is inclosedby this tube 15 and firmly connects the latter with the said handle by means of a nut 16.
Depending inward and downward from the cone-top 14; is the soap receptacle or vessel 17 5 having a series of apertures 18 and a removable bottom 19, provided with L-shaped slots 20, adapted to be engaged by the lugs or projeetions 21 on the sides ofthe receptacle to lock the bottom in place.
Referring to the modification shown in Fig.
fitting closely the sides of the cylinder 1,
3, the sleeve 23 and tube 2-l are without slots and the spiral spring 24 is inclosed by the said sleeve and has one end resting on the bottom of the sleeve 23 and the other end engaging a flange 27 of the tube, thus housing the spring and accomplishing the same results as in the preferred form.
In the operation of the soaper and washer the cylinder 1 is pushed into the tub or other vessel containing articles to be washed and the handle operated to oscillate the plunger back and forth, whieh forces the water through said articles and at the same time thoroughly soaps them, for a sufficient amount of water is admitted into the vessel containing soap to make suds, and the latter is sprayed out through the apertures 18. In this operation it will be observed that no pressure is required to make the upward stroke of the plunger, as the spring performs this function.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to. secure by Letters Patent, is 1 1. In a clothes washer and soaper, the combination with the cylinder having a sleeve projecting from its top, of an openbottom imperforate plunger having a tube projecting from its top through the sleeve, andprovided with a handle, and a soap-receptacle having an imperforate top and bottom and dependingfrom the inside top of the plunger, and provided with a series of side apertures.
2. The combination with a cylinder having a cone-shaped top, anda sleeve 'proje'ction tures, and side pins, and a solid removable 1o integral with the top, of an open-bottomilnbottom provided with L-shaped slots, as set perforate plunger inclosed by the cylinder forthl and having acme-shaped top, and a tubular In testimony whereof I aflix my signature projection integral with the said top and proin presence of two witnesses.
