Beit known that I, BENJAMIN PERRY RICE, of Petersburg, in the county of Boonel and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Gates; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and eXact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertainsV to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvement in gates, -and particularly to the class known as swinging hand-openers and it consists in certain novel features of' construction and combinations of parts, as will hereinafter be more fully described, and pointed out in the claim.

A A' representthe end posts, which aline with the gate when in its normal or closed The post A' projects a suitable distance above post A and is provided at its upper end with atenon 2 for engaging the mortised end of forwardly-projecting beam 3, which latter is removably supported on said post A' by the pin 4, passing through a hole in tongue or tenon 2. The upper face of beam 3 is provided at a point slightly forward of its center with a mortise 5 for the reception of the cross-beam 6, which latter is supported at its ends by the side posts 7 7. This crossf beam is held against sidewise movement by the pin 8, which latter passes through both said cross-beam 6 and forwardly-projecting beam 3. The ends of cross-beam 6 are provided with square mortises, through which the square tenoned ends of posts 7 7 pass, whereby the connection above referred to is effected. These ends are removably held on said posts by means of pins passing through the tenoned ends, as shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
The bottom face of forwardly-projecting beam 3 is provided at a point adjacent to its outer end and in advance of mortise 5 with a metal socket 9, which latter alines with a corresponding socket 10, located in the top of short post l1.
C represents a gate composed of the usual end rails and cross-bars. This gate, at a point in rear of its center, is provided with a apost 12, which latter projects a short distance above and below the top and bottom edges ofl said gate.
Iny order to provide a strong and durable gate, and, further, to guard against longitudinal strains, I have adopted the means of bracing illustrated in the drawings.
Each 'end ofthe pivot-post 12 is provided with a cap 13, carrying a centrally-located pintle 14, which latter are adapted to engage and rotate in the sockets 9 and 10, carried bythe beam 3 and short posts 11, respectively. The caps 13 are adapted to embrace the ends and adjacent `side faces of post 12 and are secured thereon by screws passingl through the extended sides thereof.
The gate C is locked in its normal or closed position by the latch 14', one end-of which is pivoted to the post 12, while its opposite end lis adapted to slide up the inclines 15, formed in postA and engage the recess 16', located v between said inclines, and when in the latter position is adapted to lock the gate against accidental movement.
The gate is opened or closed from either side by means of ropes suitably supported and attached to the latch 14. `The forward ends of operating-ropes 16 17 are securely secured to the pivoted latch 14', as shown in the drawings. Each rope passes through an eye or pulley carried by the long brace-rod, thence through an eye or pulley secured to the side posts, from which point it passes through an eye or pulley secured to the bottom face of beam 3, and, finally, through a pulley carried by the cross-beam 6, from which it depends 4any desired distance, and is provided at its free end with a ring or weight 18.
From the above it will beseenthat one end of each operating-rope is attached to the latch 14', While its opposite end depends from a pulley carried by cross-beam 6 and at the side of the gate opposite the point of its attachment to the latch. By thus arrangingthe ropes 16 17 the operation of lifting the latch out of enl gagement with its keeperas well as the opening of the gate is performed with a single rop and by a continuous pull thereon.
The gatev is opened by pulling downwardly on the ring or weighted end of either of the operating-ropes, which operation releases the IOO latch 14: and causes the gate to move on its pivots in a direction from the operator sufficient to afford an unobstructed passage for a vehicle. The gate is closed by exerting a downward pull on the ring or Weighted end of the other rope.
By reference to the drawings it will be seen that by locating the pivotal points of gate C as shown and described a foot passage-way is also provided when the gate is in its open position, and, further, by locating the ends of the operating-ropes as shown and described the operator when on foot is not required to deviate from a straight line, as all the operating mechanism is in line with and adjacent to the foot passage-way.
If desired, gate C may be'perfectly balanced by securing a weight to the short section thereof.
Should the gate for any reason get out of order, its removal forv repairs can be easily and quickly effected by partially unscrewing the pulley-screws passing through the crossbeam G and the pins from tongued ends of posts 7 7 and pin l from the tongued end of post A', after which cross-beam 6 and forwardly-projecting beam S may be entirely removed, thus leaving gate C free to be lifted from its place.
Having fully described 1nyinvention,what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with four posts, two of which are located at opposite ends of the gate when closed, and two of which are located on opposite sides of the gate, of a gate pivotally supported between its ends and adapted to simultaneously open and close two passages, and a pivoted latch mounted upon the gate and carried thereby, of two ropes each of which has one of its ends attached to the pivoted latch on the gate, each of said ropes leading from said latch through pulleys mounted upon or near one of the side posts and from thence passing through pulleys mounted upon or near the other side posts, substantially as set forth.
