scription of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon,which form a part of this specification.

My present invention has reference to a novel construction of metallic frame for pocket-books, bags, satchels, and the like,and relates also to a novel construction of springactuated looking or holding latch connected with the frame-sections to hold them in their closed relation to one another.

The invention therefore has for its main object to provide a simple, strong, and durable construction of frame which shall be of a neat appearance, and also a novel construction of lockin g or holding latch for the same.

The invention consists in the novel construction of pocket-book or bag frame and spring actuated holding or locking latch therefor, and, furthermore, in the novel arrangements and combinations of parts, such as will be hereinafter fully described, and finally embodied in the clauses of the claim.

In the accompanying sheet of drawings, which clearly illustrate my invention, Figure l is a front viewof a pocket-book or bag frame made according to my present invention; and Fig. 2 is a top View of the two framesections of the frame, illustrating the looking or holding catch or latch in its closed or locked relation to said frame-sections. Fig. 3 is a bottom View of portions of the two frame-sections, illustrating the arrangement of a spring for operatively connecting said locking or holding latchto one of said frame-sections. Fig. 4, is avertical cross-section, taken on line min Fig. 3, illustrating the two frame-sections and looking or holding latch in the closed review of a portion of one of the frame-sections and an ornamental edge strip, illustrating one manner of securing said strip to the framesection. Fig. 7 is a bottom view, on an enlarged scale, of said looking or holding latch and its spring; and Fig. 8 is a side View of the same. Fig. 9 is a perspective View of a spring of a slightly-modified form of construction to be used in connection with the holding or looking latch of the frame-sections.

Similar letters of reference are employed in all of the above-described views to indicate corresponding parts.

In said drawings, a and a are the two framesections, preferably made U shape, which are pivotally connected at their free ends in the usual manner to form a purse, pocket-book, bag, or other like frame. Upon one of said frame-sections, as a,is a flat and ornamental edge piece or strip 1), having suitable tongues b,formed integral therewith,which are passed through openings a in the frame-section a and whereby said strip 1? is secured to said frame-section, as will be clearly seen from Fig. 6. The end portions 5 of said strip 1) are united with the frame-sections by the usual pivotal pins (1. As will be seen from said Fig. 6 the upper surface 19 of the edge piece or strip 1) is bounded by two marginal beads b which extend above said surface 6 and, aside from producing an ornamental appearance of said edge piece or strip Z2, also greatly add in stiffening the same and the pocket-book or bag frame, as is clearly evident. Said edge strip 1) is cut away, as at b (see Figs. 1 and 2,) for the reception of the holding or looking latch C. Said latch consists, essentially, of a top or face plate 0, having at one end a downwardlyextending edge or shoulder c, provided with two or more clamping-fingers 0 while the opposite edge 0 of the plate a is turned down and over against the under surface of the plate 0 and is provided with a suitable holding or catch portion 0 The opposite edges- 0 of said plate a are provided with downwardly-extending and perforated ears or lugs 0 Firmly secured against the under surface of the plate a, by being arranged between said cars or lugs and clamped by the fingers c and the folded edge e of the plate 0, is a holding-plate e, having the outwardlyforced portion c and two cut-away parts or openings c with a holding lug or projection c" arranged between them. Held in operative position by said lug or projection c is a torsional spring f, having its part f bent in the manner of a U to extend around said lug c and the bent portions f extending up through said openings c in the plate 6. Said spring is provided with the oppositelyextending portions and f, which are peculiarly bent and are loosely arranged in said perforated ears or lugs c, and the free end of the portionf of said spring being made hookshaped, as at f. Said latch is secured in its operative position in an opening a in the top of'the frame-section a, as follows: The lugs or ears 0 of the plate 0 are passed through said opening a so that the oppositely-extending portions f and f of the spring are placed between the guide-pieces a and a struck up in the sheet-metal frame-section a, and the free end of the portion f of the spring resting against the under surface or portion a of the f rame-section, while the hook-shaped end f of the portion f engages the inner surfaces a and a of the frame-section, as will be clearly seen from an inspection of Figs. 3, 4, and 5. Of course it will be evident that I may dispense with said hook-shaped end f of the spring f and may employ in lieu thereof a bent end, as f", as shown in Fig. 9, which rests against one of the said inner surfaces of the frame-section a. Said end of the spring f may also be of any desirable curvature, as

will be clearly understood.

From the above description it will be seen that the holding catch or latch C is pivotally and operatively connected with the frame section a, and when the plate 0 is raised, as indicated in Fig. 5, the several portions of the spring become slightly distorted, said guidepieces (Hand a however, retaining the spring in its proper position in the chambered portion of said frame-section a, and when the operator releases his or her hold upon the plate 0 of the catch C then said spring f will immediately tend to resume its normal inoperative position, and hence causes the catch O to rest directly upon an upwardly and outwardly projecting stop (t formed integral with the frame-section, as shown.

As will be more especially seen from Figs. at and 5, the frame-section a" is provided on its upper part with an upwardly-cxtending holding portion or projection a integrally or otherwise connected with said frame-section, the curved portion a of which, when the two frame-sections are being closed, sliding against the curved surface 0 on the catch portion 0 of the plate 0, whereby said plate is raised and the spring fcaused to act. As soon as the holding portion or projection a has passed the edge e of said catch portion 0 then the spring f causes the plate to be forced down upon said stop a, hereinabove mentioned, and the looking or holding catch C is 111 its locked or holding engagement with the frame-section a. By simply raising the said plate 0 the holding or catch portion 0 becomes disengaged from the holding portion or projection a on the frame-section a and the two frame-sections a and a can be separated, as will be evident.

IIaving thus described my invention, what I claim is 1. In a bag orpocket-book frame, the combination, with a pair of pivoted frame-sections, of a catch pivotally connected with one of said sections, said catch having perforated ears or lugs extending through an opening in said frame-section, and a spring arranged across said opening and in said perforated ears, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

2. In a bag or pocketbook frame, the combination, with a pair of pivoted frame-sections, of a catch pivotally connected with one of said sections, consisting, essentially, of a plate 0, having a downWardly-extending edge e, clamping-fingers c thereon, a clamping edge 0, having a catch-piece c ears or lugs 0 a plate 0 held by said fingers and said edge 0 against the plate 0, said plate 6 having openings, and a holding-lug 6 the said ears or lugs 0 extending through an opening in said frame-section, and a spring held by said lug c and having two portions extending across said opening in the frame-section and into said perforated ears, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

3. In a bag or pocket-book frame, the combination, with a pair of pivoted frame-sections at and a, said section at having an opening a and the parts a, a and a of a catch, having a plate provided with ears 0 extending into and through said opening a and a spring arranged across said opening and in said perforated ears, said spring having its one free end in contact with said part a, and the other end of said spring being hookshaped, and in contact with the parts a and o of the frame-section a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

In a bag or pocket-book frame, the combination, with a pair of pivoted frame-sections a and a, said section a having an opening a and a stop a", of a catch, having a plate 0 provided with ears 0 extending into and through said opening a ,andaspringarranged across said opening and in said perforated ears, and its free ends in contact with the under surface of said frame-section a, to cause said plate 0 to be normally forced down against said stop a, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

5. In a bag or pocket-book frame, the combination, with a pair of pivoted frame-sections a and a, said section at having an opening a and guide-pieces a" and a, of a catch, having a plate provided with perforated ears 0 extending into and through said opening 0, and a spring arranged across said opening and in said perforated ears, said spring being arranged between said guide-pieces a and a IIO and operatively held therebetween, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.

6. In a bag or pocket-book frame, the combination, with a pair of pivoted frame-sec- 5 tions a and a, said section at having an opening a and guide-pieces d and a and the parts a, a and a of a catch, having a plate provided with perforated ears 0 extending into and through said opening a and a spring 10 arranged across said opening and in said perforated ears, said spring being arranged between said guide-pieces a and a and operatively held therebetween, said spring having CHRISTIAN I-IIERING.
