I UNITED STATES PATENT GEEICE.
A CHARLES W. BETTS, OF WALLACE, IDAHO.
ToBAooo oo NTAlNVll-.R AND PIPE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 588,259, dated August 17, 1897. Application filed March 24, 1897. Serial No. 629,050. (No model.)
and the object in View is to provide an at! tachment having such a construction as to facilitate its 'application to a base with which n a smoke-conveyer is connected, the attachment consisting of a tobacco container or cartridge adapted to be replaced when exhausted by the consumption of its contents and capable of use either with or without a containing-bowl.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear in the following description, and the novel features -vthereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure l is a central sectional View of an approved form of pipe including a bowl having a detachable section for inclosing the tobacco container or cartridge. Fig. 2 is a Vside view of the bowl. Fig. 3 is a detail view in perspective of the tobacco container or cartridge detached. Fig. 4 is a View of a tobacco container or cartridge applied to a modilied construction of base or holder adapted for communication with a plurality of smoke-.conveying tubes or stems. Fig. 5 is a View of another modified construction of holder embodying a plurality of rests for tobacco containers or cartridges having a ployed.
single outlet in connection with which one or more smoke conveyers or stems may be em- Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the iigures of the drawings.
The essential feature of my invention resides in atobacco container or cartridge consisting of a shell l, preferably of combustible or perishable material, as paper or its equivalent, adapted tobe destroyed gradually by central perforation 3,-througl1 which smoke from the contents of the shell may be drawn.
'The head forming the bottom of the shell is lalso provided in its lower side with a recess or socket 4L, adapted to receive a projection 5Y of corresponding shape supported by a suitable holder or base 6, which in the construction illustrated in Fig. l consists of the lower section of a pipe-bowl '7, having a stem 8, of whichpthe' bore 9 is extended to and terminates at the center of the projection 5 to register With the perforation 3 in the bottom of the shell. Said pipe-bowl includes an upper lremovable section l0, having in itslower edge a groove ll to receive a rib l2, rising from the holder 6.
The bore of the bowl is preferably of larger diameter than the exterior of the shell to form an annular space surrounding the shell when fitted in the bowl, this space giving ven# tilation to facilitate,'thecornbustion of the contents of the shell, and in order to still further increase the supply of air to the contents of the shell I preferably perforate the side wall of the bowl, particularly the removable section l0, las shown at l0, whereby as the shell and contents are consumed'tlie oxygen necessary for supporting combustion is sup- -plied through the wall of the shell and the annular space surrounding the latter and is communicated directly to the burning surface of the contents of the shell beneath the superposed layer of ashes which has been left by the prior combustion. U
In Fig. 4 I have shown the container or cartridge embodying the essential features of my invention and constructed as hereinbefore described applied in the operative position to a holder 13, ,which is adapted to be arranged upon a suitable support, suchas a table or other'article having a iiat surface (indicated in dotted lines at 14) and adapted to form a stand, the attachment being made by means of a threaded extension l5 of the IOO holder 13, the channel 16 through the holder being extended through said extension for communication with a stem 17, to which may be attached a plurality of tubes 18, adapted for use by different smokers. Combined with the holder or rest 13 I have also shown a simple form of ash-receiver 13 suitable for catching ashes which may drop from the cartridge during the consumption thereof, the inner edge of said receiver extending under the peripheral edge of the disk or head forming the lower end of the cartridge and adapted to be removed therewith from the holder or rest to empty the receiver.
Also in Fig. I have shown another form of holder provided with a plurality of rests 19, of which the channels 2O communicate with a common stem 21, to which either one or a plurality of tubes may be applied for the use of the desired number of smokers. The rests are connected with said common stein by means of a suitable numberof arms 22 to form a bracket.
It will be understood from lthe foregoing description that the tobacco containers or cartridges are adapted to be filled and may be sold independently of the holder or sup port in connection with which they are to be used, each being abandoned after use to give place for its successor, and if sold as an article of manufacture in a filled condition the top thereof may be closed by an extension 1 of the shell, which may be ignited in the act of lighting the contents of the shell or may be removed or torn olf previous to lighting; and in order to facilitate the uniform consumption of the contents of the shell I preferably form therein an axial draft-channel 1l', registering with the perforation 3 and extending to the top of the contents.
Various changes in the form, proportion, and the minor details of construction maybe resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages 'of this invention.
I-Iaving described my invention, what I claim is 1. The combination with a tobacco container or cartridge having a disk bottom, of a holder or rest having an attached stem and provided with means for engaging said disk bottom of the cartridge, and aremovable section supported by the holder or rest for surrounding the contained cartridge and having a bore of larger diameter than the exterior of the cartridge, substantially as specified.
2. The combination with a tobacco conta-iner or cartridge and having a disk bottom provided with a socket, of a holder or rest adapted to support the cartridge and having an attached stein and a projection to engage said socket, and a perforated section of a depth equal with the cartridge detaehably secured to the holder or rest and adapted to combine therewith to form a bowl, the bore of said detachable section being of larger diameter than the cartridge to form an intervening air-space between the contiguous surfaces thereof, substantially as specified.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES XV. BETTS.
