Description

UNITED STA-TES PATENT FFICE.
J. S. HAZARD, OF NEWPORT, RHODE ISLAND.
IMPROVED INSTRUMENT FOR REMOVING WIRES FROM BOTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,820, dated October 16, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMns S. HAZARD, of Newport, in the connty of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and Improved Implement for Removing the Fastenings of Oorks to Soda and other Bottles;
and I do hereby declare that the following is a' full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the ac-V companying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The present invention relates to a new and improved implement or tool for the removal of the fasteners for the corks of soda and other bottles, when such fasteners are composed of a loop hung to or on the neck of the bottle so as to swing and be broughtover the top or upper end of the cork, and thus iirmly and securely hold it in place; the implement embraced in the present invention consisting of an arm or bar, fork-shaped at one end, by which it is placed upon and about the neck of a bottle in combination with a hook-lever so hung to said fork-shaped arm that when the latter is over and upon the neck of the bottle the said hook-lever can be engaged with the loop-fastener for the cork of the same, in such a manner that by then properly operating the said lever it will draw the fastener-loop off and away from the top of the cork, leaving the cork free to be removed either by hand or by the pressure of the gas within the bottle, if used for soda or other similar liquids.
In the accompanying plate of drawings my improved implement is illustrated, Figure l being a side view of the same as applied to the neck of a soda-water bottle, and Fig. 2 a plan or top view of the same.
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
A in the drawings represents a sodawater bottle, which may be of any of the usual forms for such bottles. B is its cork or stopper, and O the loop-fastener by which it is held in the bottle; this loop-fastener being hung to the sides of the bottle, so as to be swung over lthe top of the cork or stopper, and thus firmly and 'securely hold it in place.
D is my improved implement or tool for unfastening or removing the loop from the top of the cork or stopper to the bottle, which implement consists of a bar or rod, E, made of suoli a fork shape at one end, F, so as to embrace the neck of the bottle, as shown in the drawings, and of a bent lever, G, hung upon a fulcrum at H of the bar E, and at one end, I, made of a hook shape, the handle of this lever G and that of the rod E being similar to those of a pair of tongs, shears, and other like implements.
In the use of my improved implement it is first placed by its forked-end bar E over the neck of the bottle, after which the hook-shaped lever is engaged with the fastenerloop upon the upper side of the cork, with the hand or hands embracing the handles of the lever and bar, when, pressing the same down, the forked lever is thereby made to swing the loop-fastener off and away from the top of the cork, as is obvious without any further explanation, thus leaving the cork free to be removed at pleasure. v
It is useless to herein particularly specify the many advantages secured by my improved implement, as the simplicity is manifest, as well as its effectiveness and practicability for the purpose for which it is intended.
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The implement herein described, the same consisting of the fork-shaped bar E and hooklever G, when combined together substantially in the manner and for the purpose described.
JAMES S. HAZARD.
