Description

(N0 Mddel.)
0., I. LOZANO. GASHIERS AND SALESMANS 70112.01; BOOK.
Patented July 20,1897.
UNITED STATES PATENT Urrrcn.
CHARLES I. LOZANO, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT on COLUMBIA.
CASHIERS AND SALESMANS CHECK-BOOK.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,925, dated July 20, 1897.
Application filed March 18,
of three sheets bound together in ordinary book form, each sheet on which inscriptions are to be made composed of a series of detachable sections separable from each adjoining one by intermediate lines of perforations dividing the sheets into a series of sections of required size consecutively numbered, each of the series of sections into which the sheets are divided being respectively removable from the bound book by a line of perforations at right angles to the transverse perforated lines that divide each page into sections.
My invention further consists of means whereby each side of the intermediate sheet of the several groups composing the book shall receive a perfect copy of entries made on the sheets of detachable sections overlying the respective sides of said intermediate sheet.
In carrying out my invention the detachable s'ections are consecutively numbered, as before set forth, and the face of the intermediate sheet underlying each sheet of detachable sections has imprinted thereon numerals in the same serial order and of the same character as appear upon the sheet of detachable sections overlying the respective face of said intermediate sheet, so that copies of what is inscribed on the several detachable sections'will appear upon the face of the intermediate sheet of every group in same consecutive order as inscribed on the detachable sections overlying the respective face of the intermediate sheet of each group.
My invention further consists in the ar rangement of the several groups so that when the first front sheets of detachable sections of all the groups have been utilized from commencement to end of the book the book is overturned and inverted, whereby the rear cover becomes the front and each remaining sheet of detachable sections that was primarily at the rear face of the intermediate sheet of each 1897. Serial No.628,070. (No model.)
respective group overlies its front face, whereby each side of every permanent sheet of all the groups will receive copies of what is inscribed on overlying detachable sections from time to time, as hereinafter fully set forth, and plainly illustrated in the drawings forming a part of the specification.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, wherein like letters of reference point out similar parts on each figure, Figure l represents an open book embodying my invention, showing face of its first sheet, the upper section, upon which an entry has been made, be-
ing partly detached, displaying an underlying unbound sheet of carbon-paper. Fig. 2 is another view of the book, the whole first sheet being turned backwardly toward the book-cover, said sheet having its upper section detached therefrom and'showiug on the under page a perfect copy of what was written on the removed section. Fig. 3 represents the book opened with its second sheet folded backwardly, showing its reverse face, said sheet permanently connected to the book and the blank face of the opposite sheet divided into sections by lines of perforations. Fig. 4 represents the book open to its fourth page, which is divided into sections, the view displaying the front face of the fourth page and back of the third page folded backwardly. Fig. 5 represents the book opened in a reversed position to that shown in Fig. 1, the lower end of the front page being slightly upturned, showing the under permanent page, upon which facsimile copies of entries ap-- pear. Fig. 6 represents the book open, showing faces of sheets in the same manner as illustrated in Fig. 3, but in reversed position. Fig. 7 is a similar View to Fig. 4, showing the book in reversed position.
In the drawings, A is the book proper, having front cover 13 and rear cover 0, their relative positions being interchanged by reversal of the book, as illustrated in Figs. 5, 6, and 7, after a consecutive number of sheets have been utilized.
The book is composed of sheets, the first one being D, of which cl represents its front face to receive incriptions and d its rear side. The sheets upon which entriesare to be made are divided into sections 61 by transverse lines of perforations e, the whole sheet having at its rear end a vertical line of perforations c, by which each section (Z, when separated from the next adjoining one, can be readily re moved from the book.
To fully illustrate the practical operation of my invention, the sheets which are to receive entries thereon are shown with final columns ruled to receive numerals to set forth price of sales made; but any form of spaces on which such entries are to appear may be used without departing from the scope and purview of my invention. I have also shown on upper section of sheet D a detachable section thereof upon which record of a sale has been inscribed, and a facsimile thereof appears on the next sheet F, Fig. 2, the intermediate sheet of carbon-paper E, employed forsuch copying, being removed, but its location under the sheet upon which entries are to be made is shown in Fig. 1. Next following each sheet divided into separable sections is a sheet of paper F, which is permanently bound in the book and is imprinted with numerals of the same character as appear on the next superimposed sheet upon which inscriptions are to be made, so that every copy made thereon by means of a temporary interposed sheet of carbon-paper E will be correspondingly tabulated.
The permanent sheets, such as F, have a front surface f, provided with numerals, as above set forth, and upon its reverse side f also numerals of same description to receive copies thereon of like character when one set of sheets, such as D, have been entirely used and removed from the book and the book is overturned, as presently set forth.
G represents the third sheet of the book proper, the back surface r being shown in Fig. 3 and the front face g 011 Fig. 4.
II is the next sheet with displayed face, under which in practice is placed a removable sheet of carbon-paper E.
I have illustrated a book of the character described having six hundred detachable sections (Z, but do not confine myself to any number. More or less may be employed, as neees' sity or convenience may require.
After the set of sheets of detachable sections following in succession after the first one D have been employed copies of all inscriptions thereon will appear on one side of the permanent sheets next underlying each respective inscribed one. The book is then overturned in reversed position, when G becomes the front cover and I the back one. \Vhen opened as shown in Fig. 5, sheets of the same construction as the first sheet I) will appear, each in succession overlying a sheet permanently bound in the book, intermediate of which is introduced a removable carbonsheet, as hereinbefore described.
To fully illustrate and describe my in vention, so that all familiar with the line of art to which it appertains may fully understand it, I have illustrated in three figures of the drawings the book overturned in a reversed position. Its employment for the purpose intended is in the exact manner as when it is originally used before being overturned. The last sheet K then becomes the first sheet, the face of which is indicated by letter 7., its reverse side being it.
L is the next sheet permanently bound in the book, having a surface l to receive copies of entries on the overlying page K, the back surface Z of the permanent sheet L having serial numerals in accordance with those imprinted on face of the adjacent sheet M, the rear side m of which is shown in Fig. 6, the book being represented in said figure open without any detachments along perforated lines.
In Fig. 7 the book is shown open at the next sheet N, displaying its surface a for inseri r tions when said book is overturned, also facesurface on of sheet M, the opposite side m of which is illustrated in Fig. U. r
A book constructed according to my inven tion consists of a series of sheets divided into removable sections, each section being numbered in consecutive order, and between each of said sheets is a sheet of paper permanently bound in the book, having numerals imprinted thereon 011 both sides corresponding with those on the adjacent sheet of separable sections. In practice when an entry is intended to be placed on any of the sections a removable carbon-sheet is placed on the rear of said sheet divided into sections and upon the face of the next underlying permanent sheet, whereby all of such entries will be copied on space of the underlying permanent sheet, numbered in exact accordance with each superimposed removable section. By this means a perfect record is kept of each entry, as when each sheet of separable sections following serially the first one has been used the book is overturned, and as inscriptions are placed on the remaining ones copies of all such entries will appear on the opposite side of each permanent sheet on numbered spaces thereof, as hereinbefore described.
From the foregoing description, in connection with the drawings forming a part of the specification, the nature and object of my invention and its practical operation will be readily understood by all familiar with the line of art to which it appertains.
Having thus fully described my invention and the manner of its opcrationpvhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States of America, is
An invertible cashiers and salesmans book of the character described, composed of a series of groups of sheets said groups consisting of one permanently-bound intermediate sheet and two outer sheets, the outer sheets being divided into removable sections by rows of perforations said sections imprinted with indicating-numeralsZin consecutive order from front to back of the book on the first sheet of each group, said numbering being continued invertedly from back to front of the book on the third sheet of each group both sides of each permanent sheet imprinted with numerals corresponding with those on the adjacent pages of the overlying sectional sheets, whereby upon said sheets permanently bound in the book, on bothsides thereof will be preserved copies of all entries made, all in combination with a sheet of carbon-paper re- Inovably placed on face of the permanentlybound sheets'and rearward of the sectionallydivided sheets, as and for the purpose in- IQ tended, substantially as described.
