UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORG HAUMAN, OF BERLIN, IVISCONSIN.
INKSTAND.
$PEGIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,492, dated July 13, 1897. Application filed December 19, 1896. Serial No. 616,322. (No model.)
To all 11:71.01, it puny con/007%:
Be it known that I, GEORG HAUMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Berlin, in the county of Green Lake and State of IVisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Inkstands; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention has reference to a novel construction in an ink-bottle, the obj eet being to provide a device of this character whereby the bottle is tightly closed upon being tipped, so that the liability of spilling the ink is obviated.
The invention consists in the features of construction hereinafter fully described and specifically claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure l is a vertical section of a bottle constructed in accordance with this invention and illustrating the parts in the position they assume when the cover is raised. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the bottle slightly tipped and the parts in theposition they then assume.
Referring now to said drawings, 1 indicates a bottle of ordinary construction and provided with a cover 2, hinged to one side of The said cover is provided with a finger 4, extending in the rear of said pivot.
The operative parts of the device are inclosed within a casing 5 to protect the same and prevent injury in case of the falling of the bottle, and between the sides of this casing is a spring 6, fastened thereto and to the finger 4 in the rear of the pivot 3. The said spring 6 serves normally to close the cover 2 to hold it in the position shown in Fig. 2. Pivoted between the sides of the casing 5 is a detent 7, that is situated to engage the finger at when the cover is raised.
This detent 7 is held in the position shown in Fig. 1 or in The parts are so constructed that when the bottle is resting upon the table or other support the projection 10 is slightly elevated, so that the spring-arm 8 raises the detent 7 into the path of the finger 4. l/Vhen the bottle 1 is tipped or elevated, however, the spring 10 moves downwardly to withdraw the detent 7 from the finger, so that the spring 6 closes the cover. In this way it is seen that I effectually provide against spilling the ink upon tipping 0r dropping the bottle, as it is obvious that when the bottle is not resting upon a smooth surface, as shown, the detent 7 is retracted to allow the spring to close the cover.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A bottle having a pivoted cover, a spring for closing said cover, and a spring-actuated detent to engage a portion of said cover.
2. A bottle having a pivoted cover provided with a finger, a spring for closing said cover, a pivoted detent situated in the path of said finger, and a spring acting upon said detent and fastened to the bottom of said bottle and provided with a downwardly-extending projection 10.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
