UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ALEXANDER NORMAND, OF KLERKSDORP, SOUTH AFRICAN REPUBLIC.
POCKET-KNIFE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,453, dated July 13, 1897. Application filed April 15, 1895. Renewed June 9, 1897. Serial No. 640,065. (No model.)
T0 at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER NORMAND, of Klerksdorp, Transvaal, South African Republic, have invented a new and Improved Pocket-Knife, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved knife provided with interchangeable blades to permit the user to readily and quicklyremove a blade from the handle and substitute another blade of a different form or a diiferent tool particularly adapted for the work in hand.
The invention consists in certain parts and details and combinations of the same, as will be hereinafter fully described, and then pointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improvement with the blades open. Fig. 2 is afront elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is. a similar view of the same with the blades closed, and Fig. 5 is a face view of the tool-blade provided with an adj ustable wrench-head.
The improved knife is provided with a handle having the sides A and A and the intermediate or partition plate B all connected with each other by the pins 0 0 C of which the pins 0 C form pivot-pins for the blades, as hereinafter more fully described, and the pin O engages the ends of the springs D for holding the blades in the proper position.
The springs D form the back of the knife, and one of the springs is preferably curved, as indicated in Figs. 3 and 4, to form additional room at the back of the knife for a separate small blade. stance, aknife-blade Eis formed at its heel E with a curved slot E extending to one edge of the heel, as indicated in Fig. 1, to permit of conveniently passing this slot over the pivot C, so as to swing the knife-blade shut or open in the usual manner, the heel being formed with a notch E adapted to be pressed on by the free end of the spring D to hold the knife-blade in an open position. Ashoulder E on the back of the knife-blade E serves to Each of the bladesfor inconveniently push the closed knife-blade outwardly to disengage the heel E from the pivotpin 0 whenever it is desired to remove the knife-blade from .the handle. Thus blades of various forms may be placed on the pivotpin C'-for instance, the blade F, forming a screw-driver at its outer end and provided at its heel F" with the slot F for engaging the pivot-pin in the same manner as described relative to the knife-blade E. The heel F is also provided with the recess F forthe free end of the spring D and with a shoulder F to be engaged by the finger-nail, for disengaging the blade F from the pivot-pin C.
On the pivot-pin C is held a small tool G, formed in its heel with a notch G, adapted to be passed in engagement with the said pivotpin to permit of swinging the blade on the pin. The tool H (shown in Fig. 5) is likewise provided on its heel H with a slot H for engagement with the pivot-pin O, and the free end of the said tool H is provided with an adj ustable wrench-head, of which the outer end of the tool H forms one jaw, while the other jaw I is made separate and formed with a transverse shank I, fitted to slide in a dovetail H formed in one face of the jaw H The top surface of the shank I is formed with longitudinal notches 1 adapted to be engaged by a tongue J, so as to lock the shank in place and the jaw I such a distance from the other jaw as corresponds with the article to be gripped between the jaws. The tongue J is provided with a longitudinal slot J, engaged by a screw K, screwing in the tool H, and when loosened permits of sliding the tongue rearward out of engagement with its notch I to shift the movable jaw I, according to the size of the article to be gripped.
Blades of various forms too numerous to mention may be used in connection with the knife -handle and readily attached to the pivot O or O, to be used in connection with the handle, according to the work in hand.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A knife comprising a handle, a pivot-pin held on the said handle, a spring secured in the handle and extending with its free end close to the said pivot-pin, a tool having its heel formed with a slot for engagement with the said pivot-pin, the heel being also engaged by the free end of the said spring, a fixed jaw formed at the outer end of the said tool, a movable jaw, and an adjustable lockin g device carried by the said tool and adapted to lock the movable jaw in position, substantially as shown and described.
2. Aknife, comprisingahandle, apivot-pin held on the said handle, a spring secured in the handle and extending with its free end close to the said pivot-pin, a tool having its heel formed with a slot for engagement with the said pivot-pin, the heel being also engaged by the free end of the said spring, an
adjustable wrench-head held on the outer end of the said tool, the said adjustable wrench-' vhead comprising a jaw integral with the tool,
ALEXANDER NORMAND.
