COMBINED INK-WELL AND PENHOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 586,143, dated July 13, 1897.

Be it known that I, \VILLIAM B. NORTH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Sikeston, in the county of Scott and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Combined Ink-Well and Penholder; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact descrip tion of the invention,such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to improvements in combined inkstands and penholders, the object of the same being to provide a device of this character whereby the pen will receive a constant supply of ink from the ink-well when the same is in its operative position.

The invention consists of an ink-well having a rack or holder on the upper side thereof, a rubber tube leading from the lower part of said ink-well, and a penholder having means for holding the pen-point therein, and a tubular portion fitting upon the handle of said penholder surrounding said pen-point and provided with means for attaching the rear end of said rubber tube thereto.

The invention also consists of other details of construction and combinations of parts which willbe hereinafter more fully described and claimed.

In the drawings'forming part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective view of my device, showing the same in operative position. Fig. 2 is a sectional view through the ink-well. Fig. 3 is a similar section through the penholder. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the tubular cap on the end of the holder for receiving the flow of ink from the well, and Fig. 5 is a similar view of the slidingly-mounted sleeve containing the finger-guides.

Like reference-numerals indicate like parts in the different views.

My improved device is made up of an inkwell 1, having a filling-opening 2 therein, in which fits a cork 3 and around which is adapted to be placed a closing-cap 4. Rising upwardly from the top or lid of the ink-well 1 are arms or brackets 5 5, constituting supports for the penholder when the latter is not in use. ting therein, around which is adapted to be placed one end of a flexible rubber tube 8. The penholder 9 which I employ is made up of a handle 10, in the forward end of which a pen-p0int 11 is adapted to be secured and around which is adapted to be placed a tubular cap 12, having an opening 13in its outer end,through which the pen-point 11 is adapted to pass. This tubular cap 12 has an opening 14, leading thereinto, and a nipple 15 thereon, upon which the rear end of the flexible rubber tube 8 is adapted to be secured. The rear end of the tubular cap 12 bears against a shoulder 16 on the handle 10, preventing the rearward movement of said cap and also closing its rear end. Slidingly mounted upon the handle 10 is a sleeve 17, which is adapted to be forced downwardly over the outside of the cap 12 when the pen is in use. To the sleeve 17 is secured a metallic guide-piece 18, having recesses 19 19 therein, formed in the shape of the outer ends of and adapted to receive the fingers of the operator. The said recesses are so located relatively to one another and to the handle 10 that when the first and second fingers of the operator are inserted in them the pen will of necessity be held according to the proper method of holding the pen. The metallic guide-piece 18 also serves the function of preventing the ink supplied to the pen from coming in contact with and thereby soiling the fingers of the operator.

In using my device the ink-well 1 is preferably located upon a shelf or upon the top of a desk, so that the pen is at a lower elevation than the said ink-well. The ink from the said well will flow through the flexible rubber tube 8 and supply ink as it is needed to the pen-point 11 through the tubular cap 12 on the outer end of the handle. 10. When the writer has finished using the pen, the same may be placed upon the rack 5 on the ink-well 1, which being located at a point above the level of the ink in said well will stop the flow of the ink to the pen.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-

1. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of an ink-well, a solid penholder separate from and adapted to be moved independently of said ink-Well, and a flexible tube connecting said ink-Well and said penholder, whereby a constant supply of ink is furnished to said penholder While the same is in its operative position.

2. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of an inkwell, a penholder, means for securing the pen -point in said holder, a tubular cap upon the outer end of the handle of said penholder surrounding said pen-point, and a flexible rubber tube connecting said ink-Well and said tubular cap, substantially as and for the purpose described.

3. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of an ink-Well having a nipple upon its lower end with an opening therethrough leading into said well, a penholder, means for attaching the pen-point to said holder, a tubular cap fitting the forward end of said penholder surrounding the pen-point therein, a nipple upon said cap, and a flexible rubber tube Whose outer ends are attached to the nipples on said ink-well, and said cap, substantially as and for the purpose described.

4. In a device of the character set forth, the combination with an ink-Well having a bracket or support for a penholder upon the upper side thereof, a nipple upon its lower end having an opening therethrough leading into said well, of a penholder, means for securing the pen-point in said holder, a tubular cap fitting the outer end thereof and surrounding said pen-point, a nipple upon said cap having an opening therethrough and a flexible tube secured to the nipples upon said ink-well and said cap, substantially as and for the purpose described.
