Description
A. CARPENTER.
WIRE PEN GE TIGHTBNER.
(No Model) UNITED STATES ABEL CARPENTER, OF ENTERPRISE, OHIO.
WIRE-FENCE SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters TIGHTENER.
Patent No. 585,618, dated June 29, 1897.
Application filed February 23, 1897. Serial No. 624,748. (No model.)
To ctZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known thatI, ABEL CARPENTER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Enterprise, in the county of Hocking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire-Fence Tighteners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, and to the reference-characters marked thereon, which forms a part of this specification.
My invention relates to a wire-fence tightener; and the object is to provide a simple, cheap, and effective device of this character.
To this end the novelty consists in the construction, combination, and arrangement of the same, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The figure in the drawing is a side elevation of a section of a wire fence with my improved wire-stretcher in position.
1 1 represent suitable stakes firmly inserted in the ground and in line with the fence.
8 8 represent the usual fence-posts, and
2 2 represent diagonal braceu-ods, theilooped...
ends of which encompass the upper ends of tlifdhce-posts, and their lower ends are se cured in the stakes 1 1 by nuts, as shown.
9 9 represent the horizontal parallel fencewires, one end of each fence-wire being fixed to the post 8, and its opposite end, after pass ing through an alined orifice in the post 8, is inserted in a corresponding orifice in the vertical cylindrical shaft3, mounted in the bearing-blocks 5 and t, interposed between the post 8 and said shaft. This shaft is provided with a crank-handle 4, by means of which it is rotated to Wind the fence-wires taut, and when they are properly stretched they are retained in this position by means of the vertical bar 7, which is interlocked with the fencewires and which engages the crank-handle, as shown, to prevent its turning backward.
Although I have specifically described the several elements of my invention and their relative arrangement, I do not desire to be confined to the same, as such changes or modifications may be made as clearly fall within the scope of my invention without departing from the spirit thereof.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, 1s--- A wire-fence tightener comprising the fixed fence-posts 8 8, the fixed stakes 1 1, and the diagonal brace-rods 2 2, connecting said posts and stakes, in combination with the horizontal parallel fence-wires fixed at one end to the post Sand extendingthrough alined orifices in the post 8, the cylindrical shaft 3, arranged to engage the free ends of said fencewires and provided with the integral crankhandle 4, the bearing-blocks 5 and 6 interposed between said shaft and post 8, and the vertical bar 7, detachably secured in said fence-wires and having its upper end projecting into the path of said crank-handle 4:, substantially as shown and described.
