Be it known that I, FRANCIS P. BAILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Indianapolis, in the county of Marion and State f Indiana, have invented a new and useful Folding Bed, of which the following is a speciiication.

My invention relates to an improvement in folding beds.

The object of my improvement is to provide a folding bed which will be light but strong, thoroughly ventilated, capable of being used as a couch when folded, the parts of which may be readily separated for shipment, and are so assembled as to offer no lodgingplaces for bedbugs and othervermin.

The accompanying drawings illustrate my invention.

Figure 1 is an elevation of my device folded to form a couch. Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof. Fig. 3 is a plan of the entire framework with the parts in position to form a bed, and Fig. 4 is a view in perspective of one corner of the main frame.

In the drawings, 5 indicates the main frame, composed of the side bars 6, end bars 7 and corner-pieces 8. Bars 6 and 7 are formed of tubing, preferably square in cross-section, and the corner-pieces 8 are each provided with a pair of lugs 9, (shown in dotted lines,) adapted to fit into the ends of bars 6 and 7, the bars and corner-pieces being secured together by means of the removable pins 10.

To two adjacent corner-pieces 8 are secured a pair ofstandards 11, and to the other two corner-pieces are detachably secured the corner-posts 12. Between the corner-posts 12 may be secured any suitable backing, such as the ornamental framework 13 shown, or one which isupholstered.

To the upper end of each standard 11 is pivoted a similar standard 14, and to the free ends of standards 14 are secured the end pieces 15 of a three-sided frame 16, said frame being composed of end pieces 15, cornerpieces 17 end bars 1S, and side bar 19. End pieces 15 and corner-pieces 17 are provided with projecting lugs 9, over which the tubular side and end bars fit and to which they are secured by means of bolts 20.

To the surfaces of bars 6, 7, 18, and 19, which are uppermost when the parts are in position to form a bed, are secured a series of hooks 21, under which is passed the binding-wire 22 of the spring- mattresses 23 and 24, thereby removably securing said mattresses, respectively, to the main frame 5 and the three-sided or supplemental frame 16.

25 and 26 indicate a pair of hair or other suitable mattresses which lie, respectively, upon the tops of spring- mattresses 23 and 24 when the frames 5 and 16 are opened to form a bed, and which lie between said springmattresses when the parts are folded into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

For the purpose of supporting the outer portion of frame 16 when in position to form a couch a pair of collars 27 are secured to the corner-posts 12 in a position to engage and support the corners of pieces 17, and for the purpose of supporting the outer portion of said frame when in position to form a bed a pair of legs 28 arepivoted to the outer sides of corner-pieces 17.

A cushion 29, having any suitablevalance secured thereto, is provided to rest upon frame 16 and spring-mattress 24, thereby forming a couch when the parts are folded into the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2.

It will be noticed that when the parts are in the position mentioned above the front edge of the couch is entirely free from side rails, with the exception of the side rail of the main frame, and that said side rail lies entirely below all of the mattresses.

By forming the frames of tubing the entire device is very light, but is, at the same time, very stiff and strong, and by making the various parts detachable they may be easily packed in a very small compass, thus making a material saving in the cost of shipment.

The spring-mattresses are very light and are detachably mounted directly upon the surfaces of the metallic frames. The 'other mattresses are also made quite light and lie loosely upon the spring-mattresses. By this construction the various parts of the bed are open to inspection and thorough ventilation, and no harboring-places are offered for vermin.

I claim as my invention- 1. In a folding bed, a main frame, a pair of standards secured to said main frame, a similar pair of standards pivoted to said first- KAi5 mentioned standards, a three-sided frame secured at its open side to the free ends of said last-mentioned standards, and means, carried by the adjacent faces of said main frame and three-sided frame, for securing a pair of mat tresses thereto.

2. In a folding;` bed, a main frame, a pair of standards secured thereto, a similar pair of standards pivotcd to said iirst-mentioned standards, and a three-sided frame secured at its open side to the free ends of said lastmentioned standards, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

3. In a folding,` bcd, a main frame, a pair of standards secured to said main frame, a similar pair of standards pivoted to said firstmentioned standards, a three-sided frame secured at its open side to the free ends of said last-mentioned standards, and a series of hooks carried by the adjacent faces of the main frame and the three-sided frame whereby a pair of mattresses may be secured to said frames.

LI. In a folding` bed, a main frame composed of the corner-pieces, the tubular side and end bars, and removable means for securing,` said bars and corner-pieces together, a pair of standards secured to two of said cornerpieces, a similar pair of standards pivoted to said first-mentioned standards, a three-sided frame secured at its open side to the free ends of said last-mentioned standards, and means, carried by the adjacent faces of said main frame and three-sided frame, for detachably securing a pair of spring-mattresses thereto, substantially as set forth.

5. In a folding bed, a main frame composed of the corner-pieces, the tubular side and end bars, removable means for securing said bars and corner-pieces together, a suitable backing detachably secured to one side of the main frame, a supplemental frame composed of the corner-pieces, a tubular side bar and tubular end bars detachably secured to said corner-pieces, a pair ofstandards secured to the side of the main frame opposite Ithe backin g, a similar pair of standards pivoted to said lirst-mentioned standards and secured at their free ends to the open side of the supplemental frame, and a series of hooks carried by the adjacent faces of the main frame and the supplemental frame, whereby a pair of spring-mattresses may be detachably secured to said frames, as and for the purpose set forth.
