Description

(No Model) W. A. JOHNSON.
CLOTHES LINE.
I l/VVE/VTO W 1 ATT0RNEY a Mme WITNES%6 UNITED STATES Brion.
PATENT CLOTHES-LINE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of 7 Letters Patent No. 582,927, dated May 18, 1897.
Application fil d July 9, 1896. Serial No. 598,558. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I,WILLIAM A. JOHNSON, of Shell Knob, in the county of Barry and State of Missouri, have invented an Improved Clothes-Line, of which the following is a speci fication.
The present invention relatesto an improvement in clothes-lines, and has for its object the production of a clothes-line which will possess advantages in point of simplicity, inexpensiveness, durability, and general efficlency.
With this object in View the inventionconsists of the details of construction and combination which will more fully appear hereinafter.
In the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this application, Figure 1 is an elevation illustrating my clothes-line in use, showing the manner of securing the clothes. Fig. 2 is a detail of one of the sliding holders.
Like numerals and letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both views.
In the embodiment of my invention I employ two posts 2 and 3, but if convenient or desirable any other substitutes may be used which will answer the likepurpose.
4 designates the clothes-line, consisting of two parallel wires a and b,which are secured in the present instance to the top of the said posts. The manner of securing the wires to the posts may be as desired. In the present instance the ends pass through holes in the posts and are clenched.
Sliding holders 5 are secured to one of the parallel wires and catch with the other wire, the second wire fitting in the groove 6 of the said sliding holder. The slidin holder 5 has a handle 7 for convenience in sliding the holder along the said wire.
In operation the Wires a and b are separated and the clothes are hung on one of the lines. Then the handles 7 of the holders 5 are grasped and so turned as to cause the line not supporting the clothes to come within the groove 6 and so bring the lines in close contact with the clothes, thus securely holding the clothes upon the line.
I do not confine myself to the precise form as herein specified, but slight modifications may be made without departing from the essential features of my invention.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein-described clothes-line, consisting of parallel wires supported at each end by posts, sliding holders situated on one of the said parallel wires and adapted for en gagement with the other, the said holders loosely mounted upon one of said wires, and so bent as to form grooves 6, and handles 7, for operating the same, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
\VILLIAM A. JOHNSON.
