lJNrrn STATES JACOB SIIAABER, OF READING, PENNSYLVANIA.
BELL.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581 ,780, dated May 4, 1897.
Application filed July 10, 1895. Serial No. 555,453. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JACOB SHAABER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, county of Berks, State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Bells, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in the construction of bells, the object of which is to enable an increased volume and variation of sound to be produced'with a given weight of metal.
The invention is described in connection with the accompanying drawings, and is specifically pointed out in the claim.
Figure 1 represents an elevation, and Fig.
2 a plan view, of a bell embodying my invention. A Fig. 3 shows a modified construction.
The drawings illustrate a bell of ordinary form, the cylindrical wall of which is divided by a slot a, extending from the edge or lip b of the bell toward the crown c. This slot must be of sufficient width to keep the adjacent edges (1 and e entirely free of contact at all times. If a single slot be used, it converts the cylindrical wall of the bell into a curved plate having disconnected ends, but united at the top by the crown-plate c. If addiaional slots be used, as indicated in Fig. 2, he second slot a may be arranged so as to livide the wall into two curved sections or plates A and A of different extent; and, if desired, instead of the slots running parallel with the axis of the bell they may extend obliquely, as indicated in Fig. 3, in connection with a gong, thus varying the extent of the 35 son with an ordinary bell of otherwise simi- 4o lar form and material, are very decided and advantageous, and, moreover, varying harmonies result, according as the bell is struck at a greater or less distance from the edges 01 and e and with the proportionate extent of 45 the section.
I do not desire to limit myself to the exact construction shown; but
WVhat I claim is- A bell or gong having two or more slots a 50 extending from the edge thereof toward the crown and dividing the wall of the bell into unequal sections substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature 55 in presence of two witnesses.
JACOB SHAABER.
