SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,698, dated May 4, 1897. Application filed February 19, 1895- Serial No. 589,021. (No model.)

To aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. DIXoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bennett, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, hav invented or discovered a new and useful Improvement in Mop-IVring ers, of which the following is a specification.

In the aceompanyin g drawings, which make part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective of my device. Fig. 2 is a broken enlarged detail, in side elevation, of the lower end of the standard supporting the guidefraine. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail of the forward portions of the base, showing method of attaching the standard to the base; and Fig. 1 is a broken front elevation of the supporting-frame and rollers.

The purposes of my invention, generally stated, are to devise mop-wringing apparatus adapted for use either on a pail or tub or without any receptacle whatever.

In the several views, which constitute part of this specification, 1 is a pail, preferably of metal and also preferably having its front side flattened to permit of the more secure attachment of my apparatus and of more compactness. Said pail rests ordinarily upon a skeleton cast-iron base 2, provided with feet 3, lugs at 4, and spring-snap 5. Said base has a plate 6 at its forward end, having locking-recesses 7 7, in which are inserted the feet 8 8 of the standard 9. Standard 9 is forked at its upper end into arms 10 10, which support guide-frame 11, which is a light reetangular steel frame supported thus in horizontal position just above the top of the pail. This frame is stationary, and in it is held the roller 12. Pivoted to the forward corners of said frame are clamps 13 13, which are turned down over the edges of a tub when the mopwringer is used upon a tub instead of with a pail.

14 is a bolt which keeps standard 9 from rotating.

15 is the step of foot-treadle 16, working in slotted bracket 17. Pivoted to the upper end of said treadle are the two bell-crank levers 18 18, which are pivotally connected to the standard at 28 and at their upper ends to a projection 19 on the front cross-bar 20 of a sliding frame. 21 21 are the side bars of said frame, and in the rear ends of the side bars turns roller 22.

Guide-pieces 23 23 move on the side bars of guide-frame 11 to direct the movementof this roller, and the rear cross-bar 24 of the sliding frame has its ends 25 25 turned up to act as outside slides upon side bars of frame 11. Springs 26 26 are attached to front cross-bar of stationary frame and to projections 27 27 on bell-crank levers 18 18, thus tending normally to pull roller 22 away from roller 12.

The operation of the devices is now clearly apparent. By forcing down the treadle with the foot the roller 22 is pulled powerfully toward the roller 12, effectually wringing the mop, and on removing the foot the roller 22 returns automatically to its place under the influence of the springs 27 27.

My apparatus does not occupy any space in the interior of the pail, nor does the pail require to be built up for levers to pass beneath the same, as in some constructions. It is also obviously efficient and compact. It is susceptible, as already indicated, of several uses. Vhen it is necessary to put the same upon a tub, the bolt 14 is drawn, and by rotating standard 9 through a partial turn the wringer can be lifted from its base and applied to the edges of a tub through clamps l3 13, or the pail alone can be removed and the wringer stood upon its base to be used without any receptacle, as, for instance, be side the gutters of saloons.

No other single apparatus to my knowledge can be used so readily in such different c011- ditions.

Numerous detail modifications may be made in my apparatus, and I do not intend to claim the parts specifically except Where express limitations are inserted for the claims.

Having described my invention, I claim In mop-wringers, the combination of a detachable base; a standard rising from one edge of said base; a horizontal frame rigidly supported by said standard; means for at taehing said frame to a tub; a roller journaled in said frame; a foot-treadle pivotally connected with a lever which is pivoted to a my hand this 16th day of February, A.
