DEVICE FOR SECURING PICKETS IN METAL FENCE-=RAILS.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 581,690, dated May 4, 1897. Application filed April 10, 1896. Serial No. 586,968. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS WALTER BROWN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented a new and useful Device for Securing Pickets in Metal Fence-Rails, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for securing pickets in metal fence-rails; and it has for its object to provide an improved device of this character which shall be simple, durable, and easy of manipulation, so as to be easily adapted for securing any variety of railing or pickets whatever, and also to give the same any desired pressure.
To this end it is the main object of this invention to improve upon devices of this character.
With these an d many other objects in View, which will readily appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device constructed in accordance with this invention and in position upon a fence-railing. Fig. 2 is a sectional view with the link 9 and locking-disk 1O removed. Fig. 3 is a view of one of the links 9. Fig. 4t is a view of one of the adjusting locking-disks 1O detached. Fig. 5 is a view of the ad j listing-eccentric 11 detached.
Like characters of reference in the drawings designate corresponding parts.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, 7 and 8 represent opposite lever-arms pivoted at their lower ends with the links 9 and terminating at said lower ends in the opposite jaws or dies 12. The upper ends of said lever-arms are bifurcated, as at 15 and 16, to receive the lever-handles 5 and 6 pivotally mounted in said bifurcated upper ends of the lever-arms and pivotally connected at their inner ends at 17 to each other between said arms, so that by raising and lowering the pposite lever-handles and 6 the lever-arms 7 and 8 may be contracted or spread at their upper ends, and thus spread or close the lower ends or dies 12, thus providing a toggle-lever connection, by means of which the device can be readily manipulated.
The dies 12 12 are bolted on the lower inner edge of levers 7 8.
The pivots 11 11 are made with an eccentrio in the middle, so that by turning them to the right or left the dies 12 12 can be adj usted to different thicknesses of railing.
The pivots 11 11 are made square at one end at 18, so the hole 19 in the adjusting looking-disk will fit on it and thus cause the pivots 11 11 to move around with it. The locking-disks 1O 10 have holes 20 drilled in them, so the pin 21 will pass through the lockingdisks 1O 10 and into a hole 22 in the link 9, and thus hold the eccentric pivots 11 11 in any position wanted.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The combination in a device for securing pickets in metal fence-rails, the levers 7 and 8 carrying dies at one end, and connected together at the opposite end by levers 5 6, links 9 provided with pivot-holes eccentric pivots passing through the links and levers, locking-disks 10 each having a square hole for the end of each pivot, and also a circular series of holes, and a pin passing through each disk and into the links for locking the eccentrics in their adjusted position.
