Description
WILLIAM R. SATTERLY, OF PORT JEFFERSON, NEW YORK.
I MPROVED HOOKFOR DAVIT-FALL BLOCKS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 5S, [42, dated September 18, 1866.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. SATTERLY, of Port J eierson, Lou g Island, New York, have invented anew and Improved Automatic Hook for Davit-Fall Blocks; and I do hereby declare thefollowing to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, sufficient to enable one skilled in the art to which the invention appertains to make use of it, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, whichforms a part of this speciiication, and in which my invention is represented by an elevation.
In this davit-fall block a link is so attached to the hook as to upset the latter and disengage the-eye or ring on the boat as soon as the latter reaches a depth for which the rope attached tothe link is adjusted. The object is to cause the boat to be disengaged as soon as it has been lowered a proper distance from the davits, as it is much better and safer that it should drop into the water by disengagement before it has quite reached it than that it should loe held, though but for an instant, after it has touched the water. To the fact of not being perfectly freed when coming in contact with the water the swamping of the boat is to be ascribed.
In the drawing, A is the cheek of the block, and B its strap or iron band, to which the swivel-eye C is attached. The hook D is suspended from the eyeO and engages with the ring or eyebolt F, which is attached to the stem or stern ot' the boat G.
The link H passes through an orice, d, in the hook D near its point, and when the boat is suspended the link passes through the ring E along with the point of the hook. A cord, I, is attached to the link H, and the'upper end is secured on deck, and is adjusted to such a length as corresponds to the depth from the davits to the water or a point near the water.
The operation is as follows: The crew being in the boat and the fall all clear, the rope I is adjusted to the proper length so that the boat will be cast loose before touching the water. The fall, being cast loose, is paid out, and as soon as the boat has reached the position for which the rope I is adjusted the hooks D are upset into the position shown in red lines, disengaging the ring E at the stem and stern of the boat. The length of the link gives it a leverage upon the ring E, which is 'crowded out of the hook D as the latter is raised.
Having described my invention, what I claim therein as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination, with the davit-fall block, of the hook D, link H, and cord 1, operating substantially as described.
'Io the above specification of an automatic hook for davit-fall blocks I have signed my hand this 6th day of July, 1866.
' WM. R. SATTERLY.
