Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEIoE.
W. e. WARD, oF SAVONA, NEW YORK.
IMPROVED CLOTH ES-PIN.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 58,007, datcd September 11, 1865.
To all whom 'it' may concern Be it known that I, 7. Gr. VARD, of Savona, in the county of Steuben and State ot' New York, have invented a new and Improved Clothes-Pin 5 and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this speciiication, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a clothes-pin constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the saine when placed upon the line. f
Similar letters of reference indicate like parts.
The object of my invention is to construct a clothes-pin in such manner that the saine, when placed upon the line, cannot become casually detached therefrom.
My invention consists in a clothes-pin coinposed of two parts connected so as to open like a pair ot' scissors, and a button for keeping the said parts closed when the pin is in use for holding the clothes upon the line.
A B designate the two parts ofthe pin. They are pivoted together, as shown at so as to operate in a similar manner to a pair of scissors.
rlhe jaws are beveled inward from the outer edge, as shown at a, and a notch, b, is cut in each, so as to clasp the rope and bind thc clothes to it. These features a b are quite similar to those of a pin now in the market.
Secured to the part A near its top there is a button, C, which is arranged so that when the two parts are closed, or nearly closed, together it will strike against the part B, and prevent the two parts opening. To better prtvent this latter contingency, a portion of thc part B is cut out, as shown at d, for the end ot' both to rest against.
By this invention a clothes-pin is provided which will be secure against casually opening so as to free the clothes, which often happens with the spring-pin commonly used.
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A clothes-pin consisting of the parts A, B, and C, all constructed, combined, and operating substantially as shown and described.
