BOTTLE AND STOPPER THEREFOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N0. 57 9,828, dated March 30, 1897. Application filed August 28, 1896. Serial No. 604,197. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILBUR F. HYER, of Meridian, in the county of Lauderdale and State of Mississippi, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Bottles and Stoppers Therefor, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a bottle and a stopper therefor of a simple and economic construction, the stopper and bottle being so combined that after the contents of the bottle have been emptied said bottle cannot be presented a second time as an original package Without detection by persons familiar with the appearance of the package in its original shape.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of the several parts, as will be hereinafter fully set forth, and pointed out in the claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
Figure 1 is a vertical section through the upper portion of the bottle, the neck of the same, and through the improved stopper; and Fig. 2 is a horizontal section taken substantially on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In carrying out the invention the bottle A is provided with the usual neck 13, but where the neck joins the body of the bottle an exteriorly-threaded collar 10 is formed, the said collar constituting an integral portion of the body and the neck, and below the thread of the collar a flange 11 is made, as is best shown in Fig. 1.
A thimble 12 is made to cover the neck, closing the mouth of the same, and the said thimble extends downward to the upper portion of the collar 10, where it is provided with a flange 12, said flange being received within the upper portion of a nut 13, having a thread of such character that the said nut may be screwed upon the threaded portion of the collar, and the nut is of such depth that when its upper face forces the thimble to engage with the top of the collar the lower edge of the nut will bear against the flange 11. The nut may be made of any desired material, such as glass, for example, but the thimble is preferably made of pewter or other soft alloy in order that the thimble may be readily separated just above the nut by means of a knife or equivalent instrument. The nut, after it is screwed on the collar 10, is prevented from being turned by means of a pin 14:, which is introduced into an orifice made in the top of the nut and the flange of the thimble, and the said pin passes downward through opposing grooves made in the mating threads of the collar and the nut, as shown in Fig. 1, the said grooves being formed in the collar and in the nut while these parts are being made.
The orifice in the nut, through which the pin 14 is introduced, is of fairly sufficient size to permit the passage of the pin underamodcrate pressure. Therefore the pin, which is carried down flush with the upper face of the nut, cannot be readily removed, especially so since it will be held firmly in its position by its engagement with opposing surfaces of the collar and the nut. The flange 11 will prevent any person from introducing an object between the collar and the nut for the purpose of forcing the locking-pin outward.
After the bottle has been filled the usual cork 15 is placed in the mouth portion of its neck, and the thimble and its nut are then placed in position on the bottle Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The combination with a bottle having its neck provided with an eXteriorly-threaded collar and a flange therebelow, of a thimble covering said neck and closing the mouth of the bottle and having at its lower edge a flange, whereby it rests on said collar, a nut screwing on the thread of the collar and having its lower edge bearing against the flange of the collar and its upper face engaging over the flange of the thimble, and a locking-pin forced down through the nut and to an engagement with the opposing threaded surfaces of the collar and nut and lying within the margin of the flange formed on said collar, as and for the purpose set forth.
