JOHN I-IARMON- NICHOLS, OF DUCK RIVER, TENNESSEE.
Y HORSE-DETACH ER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,315, dated February 16, 1897. Application filed May 4, 1896. Serial No. 590,154. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN HARMON N IOH- OLS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Duck River, in the county of I-Iickman and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horse-Detachers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to improvements in horse-detachers for single and double harness, and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same whereby I secure important advantages with respect to simplicity, economy, and efficiency.
' The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of one set of a double harness. Fig. 2 is a similar view of the detacher removed from the harness. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the link. Fig. 5 is a similar view of the link for single harness.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the baclcstrap of the harness, 3 the crupper, 4 the hames, 5 the holdback, 6 the tugs, and '7 the front traces, which may be similar in construction to those shown in the Letters Patent granted to me September 9, 1890, No. 436,185.
The numeral 8 designates the detach er, consisting of a semicircular lug 9, formed with a cylinder 10 and a loop 12, comprising the curved arms 13 and connecting-bar 14:, all of which are made integral. Pivoted to said lug is a semicircular jaw 15, formed with a cylindrical recess or hole in its free end, with which engages a rod 16, passing through said cylinder. Located in said cylinder and encircling the rod is a coiled spring 17, one end of which is provided with a ring 18, with which engages a strap 18*, extending back to the vehicle, with which the harness is connected.
The numeral 11 designates a link with which the front traces 7 and their breeching-strap 24 are connected.
The numeral 25 designates a short trace connected with the loop 12 and with a singletree (not shown) in the usual manner.
The numeral 26 designates a draft-spring connected with the traces 7 and with the links 11 or 19.
The operation will be readily understood. In case of a runaway the strap connected with the spring-actuated rod of the detacher is pulled back, which will release the traces connected with the links and detach them from the detacher and traces connected with the singletrees.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is In a horse-detacher the combination with the hames, the tugs connected therewith provided with coiled springs at their rear ends and the double loops connected therewith, provided with a central bar, of the breeching-straps connected with the rear sections of said double loops, the traces, the detacher connected with the front ends thereof comprising the cylinder, the semicircular lug formed therewith, the lug pivoted thereto formed with a recess in its free end, the movable rod, the coiled spring and the line secured to said rod, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN HARMON NICHOLS.
Witnesses:
JOHN DANIEL EVANS, DRURY COLEMAN GARDNER.
