CHARLES E. MCKEAG, OF VLOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA.
BEDSTEAD ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 577,145, dated February 16, 1897.
Application filed Juno 30,1896.
To a/ZZ wir/0m, t may concern.-
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. MCKEAG, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county ofLos Angeles and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bedstead Attachments, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improved bedstead attach-ment for the use of invalids or others in reading, eating, amusement, dsc.; and my invention consists in certain features of noveltyhereinafter described and claimed.
Figure I is a perspective view of my improved attachment, showing the same secured to one of the side rails of a bedstead. Fig. II is a perspective View of the clamp for securing the support tothe side rail. Fig. III is a detail view showing the upper end of the vertical standard, the horizontal arm, and means forconnecting the arm with the support. Fig. IV is a detail View taken on line IV IV, Fig. V, showing means for adjusting Fig. V represents a transverse sec-tion taken on line V V, Fig. IV. Fig. VI is a detail side elevation of the tray-adjusting device. Fig. VII is a detail View showing the connection between the tray-support and the inner end of the horizontal arm. Fig. VIII is a perspective view of the plate and the pin for eonnecting the fixed trayvwith the horizont-al arm. Fig. IX is a perspective view of the fixed tray. Fig. X is a side elevation of the end piece, which is removably secured to the fixed tray. Fig. XI represents a side elevation of one of the removable side pieces for the fixed tray.
Referring to the drawings, l represents the vertical standard, composed of sections 2 3, the section 3 being adapted to telescope within the section 2, said sections being preferably made of gas or water pipe construction.
t represents a collar having a portion of its inner surface of dierent diameter and pro-l vided with a shoulder 5, said collar iitting over the upper end of the section 2 of the standard, with the shoulder 5 resting on the upper end of said section 2.
6 represents a set-screw in the collar 4, said semi No. 597,590. (No man setsscrew serving to hold the section 3 of the' Vstandard in desired position as regards the section 2, into which it telescopes. The bottoni of the standard is preferably held from sidewise'movement by means of a point 7, adapted to enter a` short distance into the floor. The standard is secured to the side rail 8 by means of a clamp 9, having a sleeve -10, which surrounds section 2 of the standard and which is adapted to slide thereon, it being secured at any point desired on the standard by means of a set-screw ll.
12 represents a lip on the clamp adapted to engage the inner side of the rail ,8, said lip preferably having teeth 13 on its lower inner edge in order to securely grasp the object to which the clamp is placed.
14 represents set-screws engaging the outer face of the clamp, said set-screws having their inner ends preferably bearing against a block 15, said block pressing against the outer face of the rail 8.
16 represents a T-coupling secured to the upper end of the section 3 of the standard.
17 represents a horizontal arm adapted to slide through the T-coupling 1G and having a series of apertures 1S. The T-coupling 16 is provided with a central orifice 19, through which the pin 2O may be inserted, said pin passing through one of the orifices 1S in the arm and extending into an orifice 21 in a plug 22, located in the upper end of the section 3 of the standard. By the means described the arm 17 may be adjusted in its supportin the standard.
3 represents a T-coupling secured to the inner end of the arm v17.
24 represents an adjustable shelf providing a support having a foot-piece' 25, said shelf being adapted for the purpose of supporting a book or other reading matter and other similar articles.
2G represents a seinicircular plate having a lip 2G, secured to the under side of the shelf 24, said plate having a series of orifices 27.
2S represents a post which is forked at 29, extending on each side of the plate 2Q and pivoted thereto at 30, so as to swing freely on said plate.
3l represents a set-screw by which the post 28 4may be set at any angle desired in relation to the shelf 24, in order to give the shelf IOO the desired inclination. The post 2S, iitting into the T-coupling 23 and being revoluble thereon, permits the shelf to be turned in either direction desired.
32 represents a set-screw by which the post may be set, and with it the shelf, in any desired position.
The shelf 24 maybe removed at will and a support in the form of a tray substituted in its place, said tray 33 serving as a table, checker-board, or for other purposes.
34E represents a plate secured to the under side of the tray 33 and having a post 35, adapted to fit into the T-coupling The tray 33 is provided with side pieces SGand an end piece 37 for the purpose of preventing articles falling off of the tray. When desired, the sides and end piece may be removed, as they are held in connection With the tray by means of pins 38 on their under sides.
My device is intended more especially for the sick-bed, but it is obvious that its use is not necessarily confined to such purposes.
My device can be adjusted to any point along the side rail of the bed, or can, if desired, be secured to the foot of the bed, and as the section 3 is movable in the section 2 it can be adjusted both as to vertical and horizontal movement. The larm 17 may be swung either backward or forward, and perbform a complete circle if desired; or the arm may -be raised or lowered by adjusting setn screw G in order to give the proper height to the tray or shelf. The shelf maybe adjusted at any angle desired, and it may be turned in a horizontal direction. Thus I provide a device that may be adjusted to any possible position desired.
I claim as my inventionl. A bedstead attachment comprising a standard, a clamp secured to the standard, a perforated plug located in the upper end of the standard, the T-coupling having a vertical perforation, the horizontal arm having a series of` apertures and adjustable in the T- coupling, a pin for securing the horizontal arm extending through the latter, through the T-coupling, and into the plug, a post secured to the horizontal arm, and a support secured to the post; substantially as described.
2. A bedstead attachment comprising a standard, a clamp secured to the standard, a horizontal arm secured to the standard, a T- coupling secured to the inner end of the arm, a post having a fork and secured to the T-coupling, a support, a semicircular plate formed with a lip and with a series of perforations, and secured to the support by the lip and a setscrew Working through the fork and through a perforation in the plate; substantially as described.
