Be it known that we, DANIEL GOFF and JESSEE '1. HIGBEE, citizens of the United States, residing at Millville, in the county of Cumberland, State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Sprinklers, which improvement is fully set forth in the following specification and accompanying drawings.

Our invention consists of a sprinkler having a head which is pivoted to a supporting-- arm, an operating-bar for said head, a guide for said bar, and means for locking the bar when the said head is adjusted.

It further consists of the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth.

Figure 1 represents a perspective view of a sprinkler embodying our invention. Fig. 2 represents a longitudinal section thereof. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation of another portion of our invention.

Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several figures.

Referring to the drawings, A designates a branch or hose pipe, forward of which is the swinging head B, which is mounted on the arm 0, thelatter being formed with or separably secured to said pipe A, as desired.

I) designates a longitudinally-sliding bar or rod which is guided on the arm 0 and pivotally connected with the head B below the axis thereof, so that motion of said arm will operate said head, so as to place the same in different positions or angles.

Secured to the arm 0 outside of the bar D is a the cross-piece E, whose inner face is toothed and engages with the rack G on the bar D, it being noticed that said bar has sufficient play in the arm 0 so as to be raised or moved clear :of said rack,where the bar I) may be operated. H designates a spring which bears against the bar D for holding the rack and piece E engaged, as shown in Fig. 2, said spring in the present case being interposed between said bar and thearm C.

The bar D is provided with the handle J for convenience of operation of the same.

The head B is somewhat of the form of the section of an inverted cone, so as to present to the water a curved and flaring face for deflecting the same, it being noticed that the operative position of the head maybe varied so as to present more orless angle to the water, it being evident that when the latter strikes the head it is converted into spray and deflected in various directions from said head, and so discharged therefrom. The head may also be lowered so as to be removed from the partof the water discharged from the pipe A, and thus not obstruct the latter, this being the position of the head when spraying is not desired.

For fire purposes the pipe A is connected with the collar K of the hose-pipe L, it being seen that when desired the cook or valve M is opened, when the water may be directed on the fire, and likewise sprayed, the spray forming awall between the fireman and fire, which guards him from the heat or flames and cools the atmosphere directly in front of him, the effect of which is evident.

In order to deflect the dropping water from the clothes and shoes of the party using the sprinkler,we employ the guard N,Which is connected with the forward end of the pipe A and depends therefrom rearward of the head B, the effect of which is evident.

When it is desired to sprinkle or spray downwardly, the pipe is reversed from the position shown in Fig. 1.

Having thus described our invention, what we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A sprinkler consisting of a pivoted head, with a supportingarm, an operating-bar pivoted to said head, a guide for said bar, and means connected with said bar for looking it with said guide, said parts being combined substantially as described.

2. A pipe with an arm connected therewith, a head pivoted to said arm in front of said pipe, an operating-bar connected with said head, a cross-piece on said arm for guiding said bar, and a spring bearing against said arm and bar, said parts being combined substantially as described.

3. A pipe with a connected arm, a head pivoted to said arm, and adapted to be moved in front of said pipe, an operating-bar guided on a cross-piece on said arm, a spring nor- 10o mally keeping said operating-bar and crosspiece in contact, and a guard pendent from the pipe rearward of said head.

- 4. A sprinkler, consisting of a swinging 5 11ead,a movable bar connected with said head, a guide for said bar, a toothed piece 011 said guide, and a rack on said bar with which said piece is adapted to interlock, substantially as described:
