WILLIAM GEAHR, OF NEW HOLLAND, PENNSYLVANIA.
IMPROVEMENT IN CULTIVATORS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,699, dated September 4, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM GEAHR, of New Holland, in the county of Lancaster, and the State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Improvement on a Combined Adjustable Cultivator; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the accompaying drawings, making a part of this specification, in whichv Figure 1 is a perspective view with my improvementin place; F1g.2,a diagram to illustrate the change of position of the shovelbeam on its .central pivot, each respectively; Fig. 3, a side view of my adjustable and reversible shovel-beam detached.

The nature of my invention consists in the independent shovel-beams D D beneath an ordinary handled frame, to which it is connected by a central post, E, with a pivot, F, on which it may be turned to any angle, so that either of the ends may come in contact (in front or rear) reversible from a A to a V shape, or any intermediate point.
The drawings clearly show my invention and its application.

The tongue M, coupled at N, with its regulating iron loop-band L perforated for a retaining-bolt, constitutes the upper frame-work, which may be variously constructed, being no part of my invention.
In addition to the foregoing I append my shovel-beams D D.
Fig. 3 shows four shovels, H, held by the screw-bars h, the central pivot-post, F E, braced to the beam D by the iron strap Gr. These beams D are further connected by screwbolts to the front and rear of the upper frame, Q Q, by slotted braces K I, held by a screwbolt and nut, T, in the center of the rear cross-piece from Q to Q. This latter bolt has a ring-head for the coupling N of the tongue M.
The anterior pair of braces, K, are placed and made adjustable on the bed-plate for the tongue, which plate also unites the two side pieces Q of the upper frame. Both pair of braces in front and rear are bent at, or nearly at, right angles above, with a long slot, 0 k, by which they are made adjustable and held in place by a binding-screw and nut. The lower end of each of said braces K I is connected to the shovel-beam with the same nuts, k, that secure the shovels in the front and rear of each beam D, as shown in Fig. 1.
By means of my shovel-beams D being centrally held or supported by the pivot-post F E and the long-slotted end braces K I, I obtain great latitude in the adjustment from parallel lines or position to any required angle, right or left, being easily shifted and adjusted.
The front braces, K K, can change position with the rear braces, I I, in order to reverse the position of the beams, so that this arrangement adapts the frame-work admirably for various agricultural purposes, and is convertible with ease into a double scorer by removing the shovels, adding the pulley-wheel O, and the seoringplows A. The scrapers B can also be substituted, and, in short, all the labor can be performed with this implement usually requiring a shovelharrow, scraper, scorer, and cultivator, and cannot fail to be a highly desirable agricultural implement.
I am aware that there is no end to the numerous adjustable cultivators and the like embracing many features common to those I employ, so that I do not claim the slotted braces, shovels, scorer, scraper, or upper frame-work; but I am not aware that an independent shovel, scorer, or scraper-beam held by a central pivot was ever before employed for agricultural purposes substantially in the manner herein described.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
