Description

UNITED STATES FREDERICK'MILLER, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
Y IMPROVED STOPPER FOR BOTTLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,356, dated August 21, 1866.
To all whom it may concern.-
Beit known that I, FREDERICK MTLLEE, of Newark, in the county ot' Essex and State ofNew Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Stopper for Bottles; and'l do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part ot this specification, in which- Figures 1 and 2 are side views of my invention applied to a bottle; Fig. 3, a vertical central section of the saine.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
This invention relates to a new and improved stopper for bottles, whereby the use ot' corks and the laborof wiring the same are avoided. The invention is more especially designed for bottles for holding soda-water, porter, and other liquids impregnated with carbonic-acid gas, and which require io be uncorked expeditiously, in consequence of their contents being sold over a counter for immediate use.
A represents the neck ot' a bottle; B, the mouth or nozzle, and a the shoulder formed bythe increased diameter of the mouth or nozzle over the neck. C represents a metallic band. which is fitted around the neck of the bottle directly below the shoulder a, and has two lips, b b, attached to or formed on it at opposite points, which pass through the lower ends of rods or metal straps c c to form a jointconnection, the upper ends of the latter being connected to a semispherical cap, D, within which an india-rubber packing, E, is secured by a rivet, d, and a metal washer, e, of concave4 forni, as shown clearly in Fig. 3.
The rods or straps c c are of such a length that when adjusted or shoved upward in a .vertical position or longitudinally with the neck A the packing E will be over the mouth or nozzle ot' the bott-le and effectually close or seal the same, t-he elasticity of the packing causing it to, press snugly down on the top of the mouth or nozzle, at the same time admitting ofthe packing being shoved ofi' from the mouth or nozzle (see Fig. 1) by pressing against the rods or straps c c.
By this simple device it will be seen that the use of corks and the labor of wiring the same are avoided. The stopper will last indetinitely, and may be construct-ed and applied to bottles at a small cost.
1 claim as new and desire to secure by Let.-l ters Patent- A bottle-stopper composed of a metal cap or socket, l), containing a packing, E, of india-rubber or other suitable elastic and waterproof material, and connected by metal rods or strapse c to a metal band, C, around the neck of the bottle, the rods or straps being attached to the band by a joint-connection to admit of the packing being pressed or shoved over and oh" from the mouth or nozzle ot the bottle, substantially as shown and described.
FREDERICK MILLER.
