Description

(No Model) A. BOHY.
DETAUHABLB' FASTENING FOR TOOL HANDLES. No. 573,565. Patented Dec. 22, 1896.
UNITED STATES I PATENT OFFICE.
AIME BOHY, OF \VHAT CHEER, IOWA.
DETACHABLE FASTENING FOR TOOL-HANDLES.
SPECIFICATION formingpart of Letters Patent No. 573,565, dated December 22, 1896.
Application filed October 22, 1896. Serial No. 609,694:- (No model.)
To (6Z6 whom 2 0' may concern:
Be it known that I, AIME BOHY, a citizen of the United States, residing at What Cheer, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Detachable Fastenings for Tool- Handles; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in detachable fasten ings for tool-handles; and it has for its object the provision of a simple and eflicient and at the same time inexpensive means whereby picks, axes, hammers, and other tools of like general character may be quickly and easily locked in place upon the handle and as readily removed when occasion requires.
To this end and to such others as the invention may pertain, the same consists in the novel features of construction and in the peculiar arrangement, combination, and adaptation of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, shown in the accompanying drawings, and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings- Figure l is a perspective view of a tool, showing the end of the handle removed from its socket, the parts being shown in their relative positions. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the tool upon a larger scale, the tool in this view being shown as secured to the handle.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a toolhandle, to the end of which is secured a metallic portion B, the end of the handle being inserted within an opening or socket in the said portion B, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
Cast or formed integral with the body portion of the part B is an extension C, the general form of which is in horizontal cross-section semielliptical, and at the extreme upper end of the said extension 0 is provided a horizontal extension D, which extends a short distance beyond the apex of the elliptical side of the extension 0, as is shown clearly in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The side of the extension 0 opposite to that which forms the apex of the ellipse is concaved or formed upon the arc of a circle, as is shown at E, and the inner end of the extension D is cut away to form a shoulder e.
A circular opening F, interiorly screw-- threaded, is provided in the end of the portion 13 adjacent to the concaved side E of the extension 0.
The tool-head G is provided with the usual opening H, said opening being elongated slightly in the direction of the length of the head, one end of the said elongated opening being elliptical to conform to the elliptical side of the extension 0, and its opposite side being formed upon the arc of a circle corresponding to the are upon which the concaved side E of the extension 0 is formed.
In assembling the parts, or, in other words, in securing the tool-head to the handle, the extension 0 is passed through the opening in the tool-head, and the portion D enters a corresponding depression I, which is provided for its reception at one side of the opening in the upper face of the tool-head. A key or bolt J, having its lower end screw-threaded, as shown at K, and its upper end provided with an enlargement or collar flange L, is then inserted within the opening, said key being screwed firmly into place by means of a key which engages the angular opening M in the upper end of the said key or bolt, as is indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings.
It will be at once seen that when the toolhead has been fastened to the handle in the manner above described it will be held securely against the possibility of accidental displacement, and it will also be seen that the head can be quickly and easily removed when occasion requires.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
A fastening for a tool-handle, consisting of the head having an elliptical-shaped aperture of the handle, substantially as shown and detherein, a shouldered portion about a portion scribed. t 10 of the said aperture, combined with the han- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature dle having the extended portion 0, having a in presence of two witnesses.
