To all whom, it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOSHUA V. VAN NAME, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Mariners Harbor, in the county of Richmond and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, forming a part thereof, in which similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

This invention relates to bottles, jugs, jars, and similar vessels; and the object thereof is to provide a vessel of this class which having been once filled may be emptied of its contents, but cannot be refilled or reused.

The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawing forms a part, in which my invention is shown applied to a bottle, said drawing being a central vertical section of the upper part of a bottle and the neck thereof provided with my improvement.

In the practice of my invention I provide a bottle A, having a neck 13, and within said neck and near the lower portion thereof is formed an annular groove or recess 0, and at a predetermined distance above the annular groove or recess C is a similar annular groove or recess D. The lower annular groove or recess 0 is adapted to receive a partition-plate G, which is preferably composed of cork, rubber, or similar material, and near one side thereof is formed a port or opening g, and above this partition-plate G is placed a valve K, having a depending prong 7a, which is adapted to project through and close the port or opening g. The valve K is of irregular form and provided on the side thereof, above the port or opening g, with an upwardly-directed extension in, and the distance between the top of the extension k and the lower end of the prong K is greater than the distance between the annular groove or recess 0 and the annular groove or recess D.

Secured in the annular groove or recess D is a partition-plate ll, of cork, rubber, or similar material, and formed in one side thereof and opposite the port or opening gin the plate G is a similar opening h, and placed in the upper end of the neck of the bottle above the plate 11 is a tube M, one end of which projects at the top of the neck, as shown at m, and the other end of which extends through the opening h in the plate H, and this tube M is curved or bent in the manner shown in the drawing, being provided with an upwardly-directed loop or bend N, the object of which is to prevent the insertion of a tool, wire, or other instrument therethrough, so as to interfere with the operation of the valve K, and the upper end of the tube M may be closed by a cork, plug, or stopper 0 in the usual manner.

The operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing. In this class of devices the bottle must first be filled before the neck appliances are secured in position, and the bottle A having been filled the plate G is forced into place and the valve K placed thereon in such manner that the prong 75 thereof passes through the opening g in'said plate. The plate H is then forced into position, and the lower end of the tube M is inserted through the opening h therein, after which the upper part of the neck is filled in with plaster-of-paris or cement, as shown at P, said cement being placed therein in aplastic condition, and after it has had time to set it will be impossible to remove the same. M may then be closed by a plug or stopper, as shown and described, and whenever it is desired to empty the bottle or discharge a portion of its contents it is only necessary to remove said stopper and invert or tilt the bottle, when the valve K will leave its seat under the influence of gravity and the contents of the bottle will flow out through the opening 9 and the tube M 3 and this operation may be continued or repeated until the bottle is entirely empty.

If an attempt be made to refill the bottle by pouring liquids thereinto, the valve K will at once be reseated, and no liquids can enter the bottle, and this operation of the valve will be the same in any position in which the bottle can be held in an effort to pour liquids thereinto. I may also make the valve K of cork or similar light material or make it hollow and of glass, in which event it will serve as a float-valve and prevent the forcing of liquids into the bottle.

The upper end of the tube I My invention is not limited to the exact form, construction, and arrangement of parts herein shown and described, and I therefore reserve the'right to make all such alterations therein and modifications thereof as fairly come within the scope of the invention.

Having fully described my invention, I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patcnt- The combination with a bottle, the neck of which is provided near the lower portion thereof with two annular inner recesses or grooves, of an antifilling attachment adapted to be secured within said neck and consisting of a partition-plate adapted to be secured in the lower groove in the bottle-neck, said plate being composed of cork and having formed near one side thereof a port or opening 9 adapted to be closed by a valve K'having a depending conical prong is adapted to close said opening in said valve, being also provided with a vertical extension above said prong, said prong being longer than the distance between the lower partition-plate and the upper partition-plate II secured in the upper groove in the neck of the bottle, a tube extending from the mouth of the bottle through the upper partition the upper portion of said neck being filled in around said tube with a suitable composition, a small plug or stopper to close the upper end of said tube, substantially as herein set forth and described.
