SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 573,149, dated December 15, 1896.

Be it known that we, EUGENE E. HULL, J EssE S. FoRNEY, and JOHN A. FEIST, citizens of the United States, residing at Silver Cliff, in the county of Custer and State of Colorado,

have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Oarpet-Stretchers; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same. This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in carpet-stretchers; and it has for its object, among others, to

[5 provide a simple, cheap, and durable carpetstretcher readily operated, notliable to injure the carpet, composed of few parts, and readily adjustable to suit the circumstances under which it may be desired to use it.

Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear and the novel features thereof will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the 2 5 accompanying drawings, which, with the letters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which Figure l is an elevation of our improvement, showing its application. Fig. 2 is a view showing the lock-bar removed from its socket.

Like letters of reference indicate like parts in both the views.

Referring now to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a plate of any suit- 3 5 able size provided upon its under face with pins, teeth, or projections a, adapted to engage in the carpet. It is provided. upon its outer face with eyes Z), into which are engaged the loops of the bail B, by which the same may 0 be moved about. 011 the upper face of the plate is a casting O, secured thereto in any suitable manner and having side bars 0, provided with semicircular depressions c, adapted to receive the cross-bars or pins (Z on the 5 bar D. The bar D may be of any desired length, and its other end is formed with a notch D' and the tooth (P.

E is a rod or bar provided at one end with a point e, adapted to engage in the floor, and this end is protected by a ferrule e, to brace and strengthen the end and prevent its splitting. On one face of this rod or bar is a toothed bar or ratchet F, the teeth of which are inclined from the upper end downward and adapted to receive the tooth d of the lock-bar D.

G is a hook secured to the bar E in proximity to the lower end of the rack-bar.

In operation the parts are set up, as shown, and pressure being applied on the arm E away from the plate and toward the base-board of the room will, through the action of the link Z), draw the plate A and the carpet nearer the point e, and at the same time the rod D will. slide down the rack-bar f and retain the parts 0 5 in such position until the carpet is tacked.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is- 1. A carpet-stretcher, comprising a basepiece with teeth, the casting thereon with semicircular recesses, a lock-bar having at its lower end a cross portion mounted in said recesses and its other end formed with a notch,

a rod flexibly connected with one end of said base-piece and having a point at one end and 7 5 provided upon its face adjacent to the lockbar with a longitudinally-disposed ratchet, the said lock-bar having also a tooth located in its notch to receive the teeth of the ratchet with which the tooth of said bar engages, all substantially as and for the purpose specified.

2. The carpet-stretcher described, comprising a base-piece with teeth, a bar pivotally mounted on said base-piece having at its upperend a notch and a tooth located therein, a rod provided at one end with a point and upon its face with a rack-bar with which the tooth of the pivoted bar engages and a bail pivotally connected with said rod and with the base-plate, all substantially as described. 0
