" UNITED STATES- PATENT OFFICE.
GRANT C. BLASDELL, OF HAZLETON, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAZO R-STRO P.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,784, dated December 8, 1896. Application filed 1111 6, 1896. Serial No. 594,530. (No model.)
.To all whom 111'; may concern:
Be it known that I, GRANT'C. BLASDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hazleton, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor-Strops; and I do declare the following to be afull, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in razor-strops, and has for its object to provide a strop which is simple and inexpensive in construction, easy to operate, and adapted to be readily attached to a wall, window-casing, bureau, or other convenient place, and also be kept free from dust or injury when not in use, and when drawn out for use be capable of bringing either side of the strop upward, as may be required.
My invention consists in the features and combination of features, as more fully hereinafter described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate my invention, Figure 1 is an end view; Fig. 2, a central vertical section on linear; w of Fig. 1; Fig. 3, an end view with 'one of the ends of the case removed; Fig. 4,
a detail plan view of the drum and the inner end of the strop and the means by which the same is attached to the drum; Fig. 5, a detail view of the inner end of the strop and connecting-pin.
A represents the case; B, the cylindrical body portion thereof, made of sheet metal, the ends of which are brought nearly together and then turned over to form beads a, leaving an opening 1) between them.
0 and D are two circular end pieces of wood having circular grooves 0 near the outer edges of their inner faces, in which the edges of the body portion are adapted to be held.
Eis a wooden shaft, one end of which is provided with a fixed bearing-sleeve d and the other end slotted, as at e, and provided with a removable bearing-sleeve f. The opposite ends of this shaft E are adapted to fit into suitable recesses h in the end pieces.
g are screws in the ends of shaft E for the purpose of holding the edges of the body portion B in the grooves c of the end pieces, and thereby securely clamping and holding the case together.
F is a cylindrical sheet-metal drum mounted on the shaft E, and i the ends thereof, each having an inwardly-extending circular flange It on its outer periphery and holesl in the center, the edges of which bear and revolve on the bearing-sleeves cl and f on shaft E.
G is an opening in the cylindrical drum F, one of the edges of which is bent to form a depending flange m.
H is a spiral spring surrounding the shaft E, the inner end of which is secured in slot 6 in one end of the shaft and held in said slot against displacement by means of the removable sleeve f, which abuts against the end thereof, and the outer end of said spring is held behind the flange m of the drum F. The sleeve f is made removable for the purpose of allowing the spiral spring to be readily taken off from the shaft when desired.
1 isaflexible strop made of leather or other material adapted to be wound around drum F, and the opposite sides of which are made of dilferent finish, one side coarse and the other fine, adapted for use in stropping razors.
J is a pin secured to the inner end of the strop and adapted to be inserted into the opening G in the drum and the ends n inserted and held under the flanges k thereof and thereby attach the strop to the said drum and at the same time provide means whereby the strop may be easily removed when worn out and a new strop supplied.
To the upper part of the body portion of the case is attached a swivel-eye o, by which the device.
When the strop is drawn out for use, the swivel-eye admits of the easy turning of the case without detaching it from the hook, and thereby presenting both sides of the strop alternately, as may be required in stropping the razor.
To provide for drawing out the strop against the tension of the spiral spring and to hold the strop after the spring has automatically drawn it into the case, a handle 19 is provided. WVhen the strop is reeled within the case, the upper portion of the handle fits between the case may be suspended on a hook or other beads a of the case and closes the opening 12 between them, and thereby prevents any dust or dirt from entering the case and injuring the strop.
In use the device is suspended by the swivel and the strop is drawn out by the handle against the tension of the spiral spring and the razor stropped, as usual, after which the strop is released and automatically reeled again on the drum by the action of the spring therein. d
It is obvious that although I have described certain specific materials for making the several parts of the device from, they may be made of any other suitable materials.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. A razor-stropping device comprising the case, the shaft extending centrally through the same from end to end, one of the ends of said shaft provided with a fixed sleeve thereon, and the other end slotted and provided with a removable sleeve thereon, the Windingdrum, the spring thereon, one end of which is held in the slotted end of the shaft by the removable sleeve, and the other end connected to the winding-dru1n, and the strop adapted to be wound on said drum, substantially as described.
2. A razor-stropping device provided with a case having a spring winding-drum therein with inwardly-extending flanges on the periphery of its ends in combination with a razor-strop provided with a pin which extends across the drum and the ends of which are adapted to be inserted under said flanges and thereby removably attach the strop to the drum, substantially as described.
3. In a device for stropping razors the case provided with a central shaft having a fixed bearing-sleeve on one end and its opposite end slotted and provided with a removable bearing-sleeve, a spring winding-drum on the said shaft having circular holes in the center of its ends the edges of which revolve on the bearing-sleeves, and the outer peripheries of said ends provided with circular flanges, in combination with a razor-strop and a pin on the inner end thereof adapted to engage the said circular flanges and thereby removably attach the strop to the drum, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
