JAMES D. BROWN AND JOSEPH A. OLEAVELAND, OF GREAT VALLEY, NEW YORK.
HOISTING AND DUMPING PLATFORM.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,468, dated December 1, 1896. Application filed August 20, 1896. Serial No. 603,372. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known thatwe, JAMES D. BROWN and JOSEPH A. CLEAVELAND, citizens of the United States, residing at Great Valley, in the county of Oattaraugus and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hoisting and Dumping Platforms; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
Our invention relates to improved hoisting and dumping platforms, principally designed in hoisting earth from'excavations and dumping the same in cars, carts, or other vehicles which carry it away.
The object of the invention is to provide a platform of such character which can be connected with a derrick or other elevating mechanism provided with means for dumping the same when hoisted to the proper place, whereby a great saving in time and labor is effected.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dumping-platform constructed in accordance with our invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom view of the same. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates two sections, to the upper sides of which are hinged two parallel bars 2, the hinges which connect these bars and sections being designated by the numeral 3. Secured to the upper sides of said sections are eyes 4t, with which are detachably connected hoisting-ropes 5, which are connected with a derrick or other elevating apparatus. On the under sides the said sections are provided with bars 6, the bars of one section, when said sections are closed or brought together, bearing against the under side of the other section, and thus aiding in holding the same should any of the hoisting-ropes break. Secured to the under side of one of said sections is a plateor bar 7, to which are secured two spring-arms 8, which project beyond the inner edge of the section and incline outwardly. when said sections are brought together, these arms engage with a catch 9, secured to the other section, the opposite sides of which are beveled, as seen at 10. Secured to the section near said catch is a stud 11, 011 which is pivoted a cam 12, the ends of which are adapted to engage with the spring-arms and spread them apart to disengage them from the catch. This cam is operated by a rod 13, provided with a spring 14:, the tendency of which is to press the rod inward and throw the cam out of contact with the springarms.
The operation will be readily understood. The two sections are closed or brought together, the spring-arms striking the beveled sides of the catch, riding over the same and engaging with the catch, so as to hold the sections in place. The platform formed by said sections is then loaded and elevated by the derrick to the desired position, when the rod 13 is pulled out, causing the cam to expand, the spring-arms disengaging them from the catch, when the weight of the load will cause the sections to turn on the hinges, thereby dumping the platform of the contents. Upon the load being dumped the sections will return to normal position and be locked in place by the spring-arms and catch.
Having thus fully described our invention, what we claim is-'- 1. In a hoisting and dumping platform, the
combination of the two sections, the paral lel bars hinged thereto, the eyes and hoisting-ropes and the bars secured to the under sides of said sections and projecting beyond the inner edges thereof, substantially as described.
2. In a hoisting and dumping platform, the combination with the sections, the parallel bars hinged thereto, the bars secured to the under sides of said sections and projecting beyond the inner edges thereof, the eyes and the hoisting ropes, of the flaring spring-arms secured to one section, the oppositely-beveled catch secured to the other section, the pivoted cam, the operating-rod and the spring, substantially as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof we affix our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
-JAMES D. BROWN.
JOSEPH A. OLEAVELAND.
