W. E. PORTER.
WATCH CARRIER. No. 572,368. Patented Dec. 1, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT ()FFICE.
VILSON E. PORTER, OF NElV HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO THE NEW HAVEN CLOCK COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
WATCH-CARRIER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 572,368 dated December 1, 1896.
Application filed May 1 3, l 8 95.
To all whmn it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILsoN E. PORTER, of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have inventeda new Improvement in Watch-Carriers and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the letters of reference marked thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this specification, and represent, in
Figure 1, a view in front elevation of a watch-carrier constructed in accordance with my invention, a watch being shown in it by broken lines; Fig. 2, a plan view of the device with the watch removed; Fig. 3, a view of the device in vertical section on the line a b of Fig. 2.
My invention relates to an improvement in watch-carriers, the object being to produce ata low cost for manufacture a simple, compact, and durable device composed of few parts, not liable to get out of order, adapted to be adjusted to shift the position of the watch as may be desired, and constructed with particular reference to carrying the watch safely and to convenience of operation.
With these ends in view my invention consists in a watclrcarrier having certain details of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described, and pointed out in the claim.
In carrying out my invention I employ a carrier-plate A, having three arms A, A, and A located, as maybe said, at the three points of a triangle, which the plate resembles in general form, the main body portion of the plate being fiat. In the upright position of the plate the arms A A, which correspond to each other, will be located in the same horizontal plane below the center of the plate, while the arm A which is somewhat larger, willbe located centrally above them in a vertical plane. The said arms A and A are extended forward to form practically rigid, bowed, yielding fingers a a, while the arm A is vertically slit, as at a, and constructed at its upper end with two corresponding, forwardly-extending,straight,laterally-yielding, pendant-gripping fingers a (0 which stand at a right angle to the plate. The inner edges Serial No. 549,130. (No model.)
of these fingers are cut-away to form a slot or passage a, which is enlarged about midway of its length, as at a, for the reception of the necked lower end of the pendant-stem B of the watch B.
To introduce a watch into the carrier, it is set down into the bowed fingers a a, after which its pendant-stem is pressed rearward against the yielding pendant-gripping fingers (62 a which yield and separate to permit the necked lower end of the stem to enter into the enlarged portion a of the slot or passage between the two fingers and then spring backward, so as to grip the pendant-stem and hold the watch in place in the carrier, with the rear portion of its case bearing upon the carrier-plate. To remove the watch, it is seized by its pendant-stem or by some portion of the case adjacent thereto and drawn away from the pendant-gripping fingers, which separate to release the pendant-stem, after which the watch may be lifted out of the holding-fingers a a. The said carrier-plate A is secured, as shown, to the'fiat central portion C of a clip formed from a single strip of fiat sheet metal, and also comprising two corresponding outwardly-bowed arms C C, terminating at their outer ends in perforated ears C 0 receiving a small screw-bolt C headed at one end and provided at its opposite end with a nut 0 the said clip adapting the carrier to be secured to the handle-bar of a bicycle or to some portion of theframe thereof and to be adjusted thereon. The carrier-plate is secured to the central portion C of the clip by means of a rivet D, one end of which is headed down upon the plate, while its opposite end is headed down upon a washer D, located within the clip, as well shown in Figs. 2 and Sufficient friction is developed between the carrier-plate and clip to cause the plate to stand in any position with reference to the clip, the rivet forming the center upon which the plate rotates.
It is apparent that in carrying out my in vention other changes in the construction herein shown and described may be made, and I would therefore have it understood that I do not limit myself to the forms shown, but hold myself at liberty to make such variations as fall within the spirit and scope of my inof a watch and separated at their bases by a vertical slit formed in the body portion of the plate; of a clip attached to the rear face of the said carrier-plate, which is rotatable with respect to the clip in a plane at a right angle thereto.
In testimony whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
\VILSON E. PORTER.
