Description
C. F. MUELLER.
Lantern.
Patented Aug. 14 1866.
iivvesfsesx UNITED STATES CHARLES F. MOELLER, OF NEWARK, NEW J ERSEY.'
IMPROVEMENT IN LANTERNS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 57,167, dated August 14, 1866.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES F. MOELLER, of Newark, in the county of Essex, in the State of New Jersey, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Lanterns; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon.
The nature of my invention consists in the arrangement of a hook on one side and a springcatch on the opposite side of one part of a lantern, fitting into suitable holes on the other part of said lantern, for the purpose of fastening the same together.
To enable others skilled in the art to make and use my invention, I now proceed to describe its construction and operation.
A represents the bottom of the lantern, to which the lamp B is securely fastened. O is the body of the lantern, to which the bottom A and the wire cage inclosing the'glass chimney or globe D are fastened. L is the top of the lantern, to which the wire cage G is attached. These several parts are constructed in the usual manner.
At the bottom of the wire cage G a hook, J, is firmly attached, capable of entering and hooking into a suitable opening provided in the top flan ge,E, of the part 0. Opposite to this hook J a spring-catch or spring-hook S is attached to this wire cage G, likewise capable of entering a suitable opening provided on that side of the top flange, E, of the part 0.
F is a slide inclosing one of the wires 1), forming the wire cageGrand the spring-hook S.
When the top of thelantern L,with its wire cage G, is to be fastened to the body part (3, for the purpose of securing at the same time the glass globe D to the lantern, the stationary hook J is made to enter the opening made for that purpose in the flange E. The slide F is then moved upward so as to allow free action for the spring-hook S and enable the same to be pushed backward, so as to enter theopening made for that purpose in the top flange, E, when the wire cage G and top of the lantern may be pressed down into its place upon the flange E. The spring-hook S will then, by its action, spring under the flange E, so as to hook itself fast on the same when the slide F is moved downward, whereby said spring-hook S is held fast in its place and the wire cage, with the top of the lantern L, securely fastened to the body 0 of the lantern, at the same time fastening thereby the glass globe D.
When the upper part of the lantern is to be detached the slide F is moved upward so as to allow the spring-hook S to be pressed back until the same will pass through the opening in the flange E, when the same, together with the glass globe D, can easily be taken off.
The bottom A, with the lamp B attached, is fastened to the part0 in a similar manner, having a hook, V, on one side and a springcatch, W, on the opposite side, attached, fitting into suitable holes or openings in the sides of the part G, Whereby said bottom may be readily fastened or detached from said'bod y C, as may be desired.
What I claim asmy invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Alantern having a hook, J, flanges E, springhook S, slide F, spring-catch NV, and hook V, adjusted, combined, and arranged as herein specified.
CHARLES FRED. MOELLER.
