JOHN M. FISCHER, OF DE SOTO, MISSOURI.
FOLDING WAGON-BODY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 569,450, dated October 13, 1896.
Application filed December 18, 1895. Serial No. 572,552. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern..-
Be it known that I, J OHN M. FISCHER, a citizen of the United States, residing at De Soto, in the county of Jefferson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and use f ul Improvements in Folding Wagon-Bodies; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.-
My invention relates to folding wagon-bodies, and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to efficien cy in use.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wagon-body constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is an end view. Fig. 3 isa plan view. Fig. a is a crosssection on the line :20 m, Fig. 3. Figs. 5, 6, 7, and 8 are detail views.
In the said drawings the reference-numeral 1 designates the transverse base-beams connected together by horizontal beams 2. The bottom or bed 3 rests upon and is supported by these beams. Secured to said bottom or bed are a number of hinges, which are also secured to the lower side-boards at. There are preferably three of these hinges at each side of the wagon, and each consists of the leaf 5, bolted to the bottom or bed 3. At the outer end said leaf is formed with two boxes 6, with an intervening space, and one of said boxes on its inner side being cut away, forming opening 7, by means of which the other leaf 8 can be connected and disconnected at will. This leaf 8, which is bolted to the lower side-board, is formed with two extensions 9 and 10, the latter of which is formed with two pintles 12, which are journaled in said boxes. Bymeans of thesehinges the said side-boards can be folded over upon the bed or bottom 3, as hereinafter described.
The numeral 13 designates the upper sideboards provided with cleats or standards 14, the lower ends of which fit in brackets 15, bolted to the lower side-boards, as usual. Secured to the ends of the cross or transverse formed with two alined apertures 21.
beams are brackets 16, to which are journaled braces 17, each consisting of the journal 18, curved arm 19, and head 20, which latter is Near the inner end the said journal is formed with an aperture 23, with which engages a setscrew 24. to hold the brace in place. Passing through the apertures 21 are two lugs 25, secured to a bracket 26, bolted to the lower side beam. These lugs are formed with rectangular apertures to receive a wedge-shaped pin 27, provided with a chain 28, the other end of which is secured to the bracket to prevent the pin from being lost.
The numerals 20 and 30 designate the upper and lower end gates, which work in guides 31 at the rear ends of the side-boards. These guides on their outer sides are provided with brackets 32, cut away near the center to form a lug 34, with which engages a ring 35, which is connected with the chains for drawing the side-boards close up to the end-gate. The said upper and lower end-gates are provided with vertical bars 30, formed with loops 37. Secured to the lower end-gate is a bracket 38, consisting of two plates bolted together with an intervening space. Pivoted to this bracket is a lever 39, having at its front side a slot 40 and a pin 41. Vith this pin are connected chains 42, connected with the rings 35 at one side of the end-gate and passing through the loops 37 of each of the bars 36. Connected with end of lever 39 are chains 43, which pass through the loops 37 at the right of the end-gates. These chains at their opposite ends are provided with rings 35, which engage with lugs 34, formed with the brackets at this side of the wagon.
The operation is as follows: As shown in Figs. 1, 2, 3, and i, the wagon-body is ready for use. To fold or knock down the same, the braces connected with the lower sideboards are disconnected from the brackets of the upper boards and the chains of the endgates unhooked from the lugs 34. The upper end-gates and side-boards are then removed, when the lower side-boards are folded over on the bottom of the wagon. The manner of restoring the wagon-body to normal position will be readily understood, and when the endgates are in position and the chains hooked to the rings 35 the chains are tightened by turning the lever over to one side, which will draw the end side-boards up against the ends of the end-gates.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. In afolding wagon, the combination with the bed or bottom, the supporting-beams, the folding side-boards, the brackets secured to said beams provided with set screws, the brace-bars secured to said brackets and provided with apertures with which said screws engage and the brackets secured to said sidebars with which said brace-bars engage, of the hinges connecting the bottom and sideboards, each consisting of two leaves one of which is formed with two boxes and the other leaf having two extensions one of which is provided with pintles engaging with said boxes and one of said extensions adapted to slip through a recess in one of said boxes and the end-gates and means for securing them in place, substantially as described.
2. In a folding wagon, the combination with the bottom, the supporting-beams, and the hinged side-bars provided with guides at the ends, of the end-gates working in said guides, the brackets and rings connected with the guides, the bracket secured to said end-gate, the lever pivoted thereto having a slot and pin, the chains connected with said pin and the chains connected with the inner end of the lever and each of said chains connected with one of the aforesaid rings, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. FISCHER.
