Specification of Letters Patent No. 5,698, dated August-1, 1848.

Be it known that I, JOHN XV. BA'rsoN, of Baltimore, in the county of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented a certain Improved Vindow-Fastener; and that the following is a. full, clear, and exact description of the principle or character which dis4 tinguishes it from all other things before known, and of the usual manner of making, modifying, and using -the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of my specification, in which- Figure l, is a. view of the window with the fastening aliixed. Fig. 2, is a section of the fra-me. Fig. 3, box detached.

The nat-ure of my invention consists in fastening the window sash up or down,or in any position intermediate, by means of sliding wedges that bind against the sash, or enter notches cut in the edge thereof.

The construction is as follows: The sash (a) and frame (b) are made in the ordinary way and of any pattern; in one side of the frame there is a -mortis'e, or recess, formed, into which a metal box is fitted;

this box (c) (shown separate in Fig. 3,) has one or two compartments, or recesses, in it, the interior back face of each of which is an inclined plane (d) a wedge-shaped piece of metal fits into this recess, so as to be iiush with its face, when resting against the deepest part thereof as at (e) Fig. 2; but when drawn or pushed, as the case may be, against the inclined plane, it is thereby thrust out-ward, as at Fig. 2, so as to bind against the sash, or into a notch t-herein. These wedges are connected with short rods, that project in front of the frame, and have proper knobs (h) on their ends, by which they are moved.
