W. A. MoGALLUM. TROLLBY WIRE SUPPORT.
Patented Sept. 29, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATE T OFFIcE.
IVILLIAM A. MOCALLUM, OF CINCINNATI, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO CHARLES ANDREW, OF SAME PLACE.
TROLLEY-WIRE SU PPO RT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 568,452, dated September 29, 1896.
Application filed March 2, 1896. Serial No. 581,489. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, WILLIAM A.l\/ICOALLUM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oincinnati, Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Trolleyire Supports, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to so-called ears employed for suspending trolley-wires of electric railways from the cross-wire supports, its objects being to provide a secure holding device for the wire, easily made and applied, to form a secure fastening without the use of solder or other extraneous means, and in which the action of the wire itself retains it immovably in position, and of such character that the trolley will pass over without sparkmg.
To this end it consists in the holder or car constructed as herein shown and described.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the device with wire in place. Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the device without the wire. Fig. 3 is an under plan view of the device without wire, and Fig. 4 a perspective view of the same.
Referring now to the drawings, A designates the improved trolley-wire holder or car, consisting of a longitudinally-extended grooved wire-support C6 and the head or neck I) for insertion of a screw, suspending it from the cross-wire or other support.
The groove in which the wire to rests is arched slightly upward from each end to the center, so that the wire contained there is arched upward from a straight line, the bottom of the part a forming the chord of the are thus formed by the wire.
The longitudinal groove in which the wire is retained is open at opposite sides, respectively, from each end toward the center, where the openings are merged in a diagonal slot or recess 0, of corresponding width with the wire, cut from below to the top of the groove. The top wall of the groove is provided with an extended lip d at each end and opposite sides, respectively, of the partct for a purpose presently to be described. The head or neck I) is united to the part a by continuous webs 1) b deepest at the junction with the head I), and inclined thence downwardly toward each end as a support against breaking strains for each end of the part in.- dependently.
In attaching the wire the ear A while the latter is still attached to the cross-wire the device is turned slightly upon its screw-stem 6 until the diagonal slot 0 is in line with the wire w. The latter being then pushed upward into the slot 0, the device is then turned back to its proper position, the wire being forced into the open sides of the groove. When in proper position, the lips 61 are then bent down over the sides of the wire to retain it laterally in proper relation to the device, and the fastening is complete. The wire is as easily detached by a reversal of the process.
It will be observed by the arching of the groove the longitudinal extension holds the wire securely against end play, and, indeed, against any displacement in relation to the holding device A; also, that by the diagonal position of the slot 0 the trolley-wheel in passing makes contact with one side of the part a before leaving the other, so that no sparking can occur.
I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States A trolley-wire-supporting ear, embodying a longitudinal embracing support having a groove open at opposite sides respectively from each end toward the center, a central diagonal slot through the bottom wall into the groove, a central head for the stem attachment, and strengthening-webs connecting the head at each side with the longitudinal groove-support, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set I my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
WILLIAM A. McOALLUM'. Witnesses:
L. M. HosEA, FRANK K. BOWMAN.
