IIVIPRVED FURNACE FOR DESULPHURIZING ORES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 56,8112. dated July 31, 1866.

My entire invention relates to a desulphurizing-furnace, in connectionwith which a steamengine is used to operate ablower, and aquartz-` pulverizingmachine,if desired; but some of my improvements are equally applicable to a furnace used in connection with any other power."
In the accompanying drawings, A is a vertical section of the desulphurizing-furnace built in a square form. B is a cylindrical hopper above the furnace A, (also shown in section,) into which the pulverized quartz falls from any suitable quartz-pulverizing machine,
as shown at C. D is the furnace under the boiler E, for generating steam to run the engine, as well as to supply heat to the desulphurizing-furnace. F is a drum in which a rotating` fan is operated by means of a pulley, F, on the end of the fan-shaft, and fis a blowpipe, or one of a series of blow-pipes, through which the air is forced onto a hearth in the desulphurizing-furnace. Said drum or cylinder F extends clear across the throat of the furnace D, through which all the flame and other products of combustion generated in said furnace D must escape into the desulpurizingfurnace, and said drum is so located that the flame, in passing from the furnace D into the desulphurizing-furnace, must pass under said drum.
I do not, however, limit myself to this particular Vform of blower. Any other bellows or device for forcing air through the blow pipe or pipes may be substituted.
G is an inclined hearth, of metal, soap-stone, hre-brick, asbcstus, or any other suitable fireproof material.
H is an inclined ame-lue, through which the flame ascends from the hearth G. The ilue H may be made of fire-brick and covered with slabs of soap-stone, metallic plates, or any suit` able tire-proof material.
I is a horizontal due, constructed and covered in the same way, and J J is a circular flue below the bottom of the hopper B.
J is the exit-flue, through which the llame and heated air and gasses pass into the chimney K.
L is a revolving stirrer or scraper in the 'space between the dues I and J, and operating on the plate or slab covering the flue I.
L is a worm-screw on the shaft which carries the scraper for feeding the pulverized quartz from the hopper to the space or chamber in which the scraper revolves. This shaft is revolved by means of a pulley, l, on its upper end, geared by a proper band or strap with some other part of the machinery.
O is an aperture through the upper and lower plates of Hue I, through which the pulverized quartz falls onto the covering-plate of flue H.
A re being built in the furnaceI), the flame passes under the blow pipe or pipes f, and by the current of air blown through said pipe or pipes is condensed on the hearth G; thence the flame passes through the dues H, I, and J, and through J into the chimney K, in the course shown by the arrows.
The pulverized quartz falling from the quartz- Crusher at C into the hopper BV is fed down into thechamber in which the' stir-rer L revolves by means of the worm-screw L', and by thc' revolving stirrer is moved round on the heated plate which forms the bottom of said chamber, so that every particle will be likely to come in contact with the heated surfaces which surround said chamber, and finally falls, through the aperture O, onto the heated plate covering the flue H, runs down said plate to the aperture t, through which it falls onto the hearth G, and running down the same, passes through the name condensed upon said hearth by the blow pipe or pipes In the hopper B the pulverized quartz is dried and partially heated, and in being re'- volved upon the heated plate covering flue I by the stirrer it becomes still further heated and partially desulphurized. In passing down over the heated plate covering the :due B, down the hearth G, and through the flame condensed upon said hearth by the blow pipe or pipes f, the sulphur, arsenic, and other agents which prevent the yield of gold or silver by amalgamation are completely removed, and said pul- Verized quartz is prepared for amalgamation,
` smelting, or chlorinization.
W W is a sluice or Waterway runnin g under the furnaceto carry the pulverized quartz, as it falls from the hearth G, to a buddle, arrastra, or shaking-table at X.
Having thus described myinvent-ion and the mode of carrying it into effect, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In a desulphurizing-furnace used in combination with a steam-engine to operate a blower or quartz-pulverizer, or bot-h, so coinbining and arranging the steam-generating furnace With the desulphurizing-furnace that the flame and other products of combustion escaping from the steam-generating furnace shall pass into and through the desulphurizing-furnace and supply the flame and heat necessary for effecting' desulphurization therein, substantially as described.
2. Condensing flame, by means of a blow pipe or pipes, upon a hearth over which pulverized quartz is passed for the purpose of desulphurizing the same, substantially as described.
3. In combination With a hearth upon which `flame is condensed by means of a bloW pipe or pipes, for the purpose herein described, a fanbloWer, air-pump, or other suitable air-generator, for the purpose of forcing air through said blow pipe or pipes to condense the llame upon the hearth, substantially as described.
4.. An inclined or zigzag fiue, With top of soap-stone, metal, or other suitable substance, for the purpose of securing a heated surface, over which pulverized quartz is passed, for the purpose set forth.
5. The horizontal lue I, with top plate of soap-stone, metal, or other suitable substance, in combination with the stirrer or scraper L, for the purpose described.
6. The hopper B, inl combination with the Worm-screw L and the stirrer or scraper L, substantially as and for the purpose described.
7. The hopper B, in combination with the Hue J J, under the same, for the purpose of drying and heating the pulverized quartz before leaving the hopper.
8. In combination With the stirrer or scraper L, and the horizontal flue I, the aperture O, (one or more,) through both the top and bottom plates of said flue, for the purpose of delivering the pulverized quartz down upon the heated plate covering the inclined flue H, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
9. In combination With vthe hearth G, the sluice or watercourse W W, for the purpose of conveying the pulverized quartz from said hearth to a buddle, arrastra, or shaking-table, as described.
