SPOOL-HOLDER.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 567,996, dated September 22, 1896.

Be it known that I, DANIEL P. PEwTHERs, of Portsmouth, in the county of Scioto and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spool-Holders; and

I do hereby declare the following to be a full,

clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

My invention relates to an improvementin spool-holders, the object being to provide a simple, durable, and attractive device for a holding thread, ribbon, braid, tape, and the like, either wound on spools or in balls,whereby the material supported is prevented from being unwound or soiled when not in use.

A further object is to so arrange the parts that any amount of the material supported may be easily and quickly unwound and severed, the cutting-point being sufliciently removed from the unwinding-point as to allow a sufficieut amount of material exposed and ready for grasping by the operator when additional material is required.

lVith these ends in view my invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter more fully described, and pointed outin the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a view of my improvement in its operative position, and Fig. 2 is a similar view with the spool removed.

A represents a rectangular frame, preferably made up of a single piece of wire bent at the bottom to form spiral springs 1 1, the inner coils of which terminate in an upwardlyextending spring-support or spool-holder 2, which latter is maintained in a position coincident with vertical sides 3 4 of said rectangular frame by reason of its outwardlycurved upper end 5 engaging. top 6 of said rectangular frame. This curved upper end 5 also acts as a stop and prevents lateral movement of said spring-support beyond its normal position by striking against the upper end of the frame. Vertical side 3 is preferablycomposed of two members,between which the end of the material or thread supported on spring-support or holder 2 is adapted to be held, while vertical side 4 is provided with a cutting edge 7 for severing said thread or material in desired lengths.

In mounting or removing the spool S the support or holder 2 is pushed to one side against the action of the spiral springs 1 1, after which said spring support or holder is released, whereupon it immediately assumes its normal or locked position by reason of the action of said spiral springs, which latter also maintain said support or holder in the position above stated. The article carried by said support or holder 2 is prevented from turning when notin use byreason of its spring action against the spool or ball mounted thereon. This spring action, however, is not sufficient to retard the free movement of the spool or ball when the thread or material supported thereon is being unwound. Before removing any of the thread or material supported on holder 2 the end thereof is first passed between the members constituting side 3, after which any desired length may be unwound and cut off. By severing the thread or material after its. passage between the members constituting side 3, and at a point directlyopposite said side, the severed end of the material supported is always accessible, and hence additional material or thread can be obtained when desired without being required to rethread said severed end.

From the foregoing it will be seen that my invention is extremely simple, easy of operation, and that when not in use the article supported is prevented from being wasted or soiled.

Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. As an article of manufacture, a spoolholder comprising a strip of metal or wire bent to form sides and ends adapted to surround the sides and ends of a spool, and a centrallylocated support or holder extending from one end to the other, said holder or support having a spring-hinged connection with one end of the frame whereby to hold the free end of the holder or support with yieldingcontac't against the opposite end of the frame, whereby the spool may be' removably held in place in the frame, substantially as set forth.

2. As an article of manufacture, a spoolform a knife or cutting edge for cutting the 10 thread.
