FAUCET.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent NO. 566,432, dated August 25, 1896. Application filed March 26, 1895. Serial No, 543,190. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, CHARLES WHITTAKER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Faucets, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof, in which similar numerals of of reference indicate corresponding parts in both figures.
This invention relates to water-faucets; and the object thereof is to provide an improved faucet of this class, designed to be attached to the supply-pipe of a stationary washbasin or similar article, which is provided with a double arrangement of valves, and which, by reason of its improved construction, avoids the usual hammering so frequent and annoying in water-faucets, and which possesses other advantages which will hereinafter appear.
The invention is fully described in the following specification, of which the accompanying drawings form a part, in Which Figure 1 represents a central vertical section of my improved faucet, and Fig. 2 a section on the line as x of Fig. 1.
The numeral 2 designates the usual attachment by means of which the faucet is attached to the supply-pipe, said attachment being provided with a screw-threaded projection 3 for this purpose. Secured to the upper tubular part of the attachment by means of the usual screw-thread is a tubular casing 4:, the lower end of which is contracted, forming a central bore or passage 5, the walls of which are provided on opposite sides with vertical grooves 6.
The upper inner wall of the tubular casing 4 is annularly cut away, forming an annular recess 7 and shoulder 8, and in the lower end thereof is an annular upwardly-extending shoulder 9, constituting an annular valveseat, and the lower end of the central bore or passage 5 is also provided with a valve-seat 10.
Within the upper part of the casing at is a closely-fitting tube 11, provided at its upper end with an outwardly-extending annular flange 12, designed to rest upon and be firmly held in contact with the annular shoulder 8,
and above this flange is a series of layers of packing material 13, which is held in place and compressed by a screw-threaded cap 14.
The interior of the tube 11 is provided with a screw-thread adapted to engage a corresponding screw-thread formed on the outside of a plug-valve 15, adapted to be seated on the upper valve-seat 9, the lower or valve end thereof being provided with an annular packing 16 and the upper end with a shank or rod 17, which extends upwardly through the packing 13 and cap 1 1 and is provided with the usual handle or ring 18.
The plug-valve 15 is provided with a centralbore 19, open at its lower end, and in the walls of which is a screw-thread of preferably twice the pitch of that on the outside of said plug, adapted to engage with a corresponding screw-thread formed on the upper end of a rod 20 within said bore, which carries at its lower end a conical auxiliary valve 21, adapted to be seated on the valve-seat 10.
The conical valve 21 is preferably formed of rubber or equivalent material, and the rod 20 is provided on its opposite sides with vertical plates or wings 22, which fit and move within the vertical slots or grooves 6 in the lower end of the casing 4, and the said casin g is also provided with the usual discharge pipe or nozzle 23.
The operation of my improved faucet is as follows, the normal position of the parts being that shown in Fig. 1, in which the valves are seated, and the faucet being attached to or connected with a water-supply pipe in the usual manner: If, now, it is desired to open the faucet and permit the water to flow out, the handle or ring 17 is turned to the right in the ,usual manner, in which operation the plug-valve 15 will be lifted from its annular seat, and at the same time, by means of the plates or wings 22 on the rod 20, which prevent it from revolving with the plug-valve, and the fact that the screw-thread within the plugvalve and that on the rod 20 is preferably of twice the pitch as that on the outside of said plug-valve, the rod 20 will be forced downwardly and the valve 21 will leave its seat, and the distance through which the valves pass from their seats will be exactly the same. If
desired, the screw-threads by which the valves are operated may be so arranged as to operate to open the valves by turning the handle or ring 18 to the "left. Whenever it is desired to cut off the flow of water, the handle or ring 18 is turned in the opposite direction and the movement of the valves will be reversed and each will be again seated. By this arrangement of valves I secure a perfect closure of the faucet, it being absolutely impossible for any water to pass the valves, and I have found by actual experiment that the hammering and disagreeable thumping so common in this class of devices is effectually avoided.
I do not limit myself to the exact form and construction of parts shown, as it is evident that many changes therein and departures therefrom may be made without departing from the scope of my invention; but,
Having fully described said invention, its construction and operation, I claim,and desire to secure by Letters Patent, the following:
The combination with the attachment for supply-pipes, of the tubular casing secured thereto and having a central bore provided with vertical grooves and the upper wall of which is cut away to form an annular recess and shoulder, the lower end of said bore forming a valve-seat, a closely-fitting tube within the upper portion of the casing and provided at its upper end with an outwardly-extending annular flange to rest upon the annular shoulder of the casing, packing material above said tube and a cap to retain the same in position, said tube being internally screw-threaded, a plug having a screw-threaded upper portion adapted to engage the screw-threads in said tube, and provided with a shank and a handle, the lower end of said valve being hollow and internally screw-threaded and a conical valve provided with a screw-threaded shank adapted to engage the screw-threads in the firstmentioned valve and a discharge-nozzle, connected with the casing, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
