IMPROVEMENT iN SASH-FASTENINGS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent N0. 56,592, dated July 24, 1866.
To all 'whom tt may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM M. MERRIEL, of Jefferson, in the county of Clarke and State of Indiana, have invented new and useful Improvements in Operating Window Sashes and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Fignre l is a view showing the application of my invention to an ordinary window. Fig. 2 is a vert-ical section taken in the plane of the line x x, Fig. l.

My invention consists in the employment or use, in connection with a cog-wheel set in the framing of the window and a rack set in the edge of the sash, which engage with each other, of a lockingl keyT or bolt so situated and constructed that by drawing it outward the wheel will be prevented from turning, and consequently the window from moving, but when pushed in will leave the window free to be shoved up or down; and of a spring to be so applied to the lsaid cog-wheel as to prevent the window from descending by reason of its own gravity, but which will keep it at any point at which it may be raised withoutV necessitating the use of catches and springs in the usual way. To enable others to understand my invention, I will proceed to describe it.
A is the side casing of a window, and B the window-frame, which are represented to show the application of my invention.
C is a rack set into the edge of the side strip of the sash, or there may be a series ot cog-teeth cut into the edge of said side strip of the window-sash; and D is a cog-wheel, pivoted in the. side casing of the window in` such a manner that its teeth will engage with the rack C, and they so work together as to enable the window to be slid freely np and down.
E is the locking device. It consists of a bolt which in shape is quite similar to a keyblank. It is so arranged that the bit or projecting piece near its end will be brought between two cogs of the wheel D, when it is drawn outward by pulling upon the knobv et, but that when it is shoved in will be beyond the reach of the cogs on the wheel D, and therefore it will not interfere with the revolution of the cog-wheel as the sash is shoved up or drawn down. By operating this screw-bolt the nut dis caused to press against the spring or to fall away from it, accordingly as it is screwed or nnscrewed.
By this arrangement the devices can be conformed to heavy or light sashes. Thus the window will be held at any point to which itmay be raised without the necessity of locking it with the bolt or key E. Hence it would be necessary to use the bolting device E only when it is desired to lock the window securely against being opened from without.
rIhe use of this spring obviates the applicacation of all such catches as require to be pushed in before the window can be operated, and it is therefore a very desirable feature.
-I do not limit myself to the particular kind of spring employed, as many other shapes and styles may be applied in a substantially similar way and effect the same result.
By this invention I produce a perfectly and accurately working' arrangement for operating and locking window-sashes, which is designed to take the place of ropes and weights, one that will hold the window at any point and permit it to be raised and lowered without the necessity of pushing in or pulling out the catches or springs heretofore employed for the purpose of causing the window to rest at any desired point, and one that will lock the window against all felonions attempts from without to raise it.
My invention provides a very desirable way for arranging the windows in railroad and street cars. The locking device having been thrown out of gear, any lady or person can raise or lower the window without difficulty, which is seldom the case with the fastenings usually employed in suoli windows, and much embar.
rassment is often occasioned by not knowing where to find or how to operate the catches Y of such windows. With my apparatus (when the bolt is thrown out of the way of the cogwheel) there are no catches to operate, and the window possesses all the advantages of windows with weights and ropes for keeping them at the desired point.
