.JOI-IN M. ONEILL, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
'sTEANhco-OKER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 565,787, dated August 11, 189e.
Application led March 2, 1896. Serial No. 581,527. (No model.) l
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. ONELL, a citie zen of the United States,.and a resident of Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in SteamCookers; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, which will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of lthis specification.
My invention relates to improvements in steam-cookers for cooking meats, vegetables, and other articles of` food and its object is to provide an improved construction of the same which shall possess superior advantages with respect to eiiciency in use.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinaf- 4 ter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a steam -cooker con. structed in accordance with my invention, ne of the pans being removed. Fig. 2 is a central longitudinal section of the same. Fig. 3 is a cross-sectional View.
In the said drawings, the reference-numeral l designates a sheet-metal box provided at one end with a vertical pipe 2, communicating therewith near the bottom and its upper end flush with the 'top thereof. This pipe is the supply-pipe for furnishing Water to the box. Near the lower end the said box is provided with a glass sighttube 3, connected by pipes 4 with the box. The front of the boxis formed with a number of rectangular openings 5, four being shown in the present instance, although more or less maybe employed, if desired. Secured to said box, and located therein at the sides of said openings, are anglebars 6, forming tracks to receive rectangular drawers or pans, which are inserted through said openings. These pans are formed with perforations in the bottoms to allow the steam to pass therethrough, and near the front end they are provided with a partition 7, forming a space therebetween, whereby undue heat ing of the pan is prevented.
The numeral 8 designates spring doors hinged to the interior of thebox at one side thereof. The inner sides of these doors are provided with sleeves 9, consisting of curved metal plates secured thereto, in which is located one end of a coiled spring 10, the other end of which is secured to the box. An opening 12 is formed in the back of the box near the top for the escape of steam.
The manner of using the device is as follows: The box is placed on a stove and a sufficient quantity of water placed therein. The doors of the box will be closed by their springs. The food to be cooked is placed in the pan, and it is pushed into the pan through one of the openings,`the Vspring thereof yielding for that purpose. When the food is cooked, the pan is withdrawn, when the door will automat- `ically close, preventing the escape of steam.
Instead of supplying the box with water and placing it on a stove, the feed or supply pipe may be connected with a steam-generator and steam supplied directly to the box.
A chang-dish may be placed upon the top of the box, if desired.
IIaving thus fully described my invention, what I claim ism In a steam-cooker, the combination with the box, having rectangular openings in the front thereof, the tracks located in said box, and the inwardly-opening hinged doors, and the coiled springs connected therewith and with the box, of the pans located in said box and supported on said tracks with the fronts abutting against the edges of said apertures and the vertical partitions located in said partitions near the front thereof, substantially as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own I have hereunto affixed my signatur in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN M. ONEIIIL.
