Description

(No Model.)
H. KERNGOOD BUTTON.
No. 564,890. Patented July 28, 1896.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HERMAN KERNGOOD, O-F BALTIMORE, MARYLAND.
BUTTON.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent- No. 564,890, dated July 28, 1896.
Application filed January 9, 1 3 96- Zo all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HERMAN KERNGOOD, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city of Baltimore and State of Maryland, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Buttons; and. I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My present invention relates to buttons, has for its object the construction of a button provided with means for securing it to a garment, and consists in certain improvements which will be fullydisclosed in the following specification and claims.
In the accompanying drawings, which form part of this specification, Figure 1 represents a perspective of the blank used in constructin g myimproved button on an enlarged scale; Fig. 2, a like View of the blank bent into form for assembling the parts to attach them to a button; Fig. 3, a top plan view of a button; Fig. 4, a side elevation of the fastener with a button above it shown in vertical section; Fig. 5, a vertical section showing the button upon the fastener and the cap to form the head above the spurs; Fig. 6, a like view of the completed button; Fig. 7, a top plan view of the shellwith which the prongs of the button engage, and Fig. 8 avertical section showing the button applied to a piece of fabric.
Reference being had to the drawings and the letters thereon, A indicates the blank, which is provided with two 1aterally-extend- .ing arms a ct, a vertical arm I) at the top of the blank, and an elongated tapering and pointed prong 0 below the arms at a. The arms a a are designed to be bent around to ward each other to form a semioylinder d, as shown in Figs. 2, at, and 5, which constitutes one-half of the neck e of the button, as shown in Figs. 6 and 8, while the arm I) constitutes one of two spurs f f, which extend through the button 13, as shown in Figs. 5, 6, and 8.
The button B is provided with a rectangular slot g of sufficient width and length to receive the two spurs ff when the button and its fastener are assembled.
0 indicates a cap which engages the spurs f f and forms a head h,which clamps the but- Serial No. 574,896. (No model.)
ton between the neck 6 and the head, as shown in Figs. 6 and 8. V
D indicates a shell or washerwhich is provided with an annular and inwardly-projecting flange t',wit-h which the prongs c engage, and are inclosed by the flange and thereby prevented protruding from the shell and catching the person or garment of the wearer. In
the center of the shell is a conical projection k, which spreads the pron gs c and directs them outward toward the flange t'.
The blankAis placed in a suitable die and the arms CL a bent to form the semicylinder d. Two of these blanks thus bent are then placed together back to back, as shown in Fig. 4, the button D applied to the blanks by passing the spurs ff through the slot 9 in the button, and the spurs separated laterally to prevent the button being disengaged from the blanks. The parts constituting the button are then assembled in a suitable die, with the cap 0 over the spurs f f, and with a blow of the top die the spurs are spread and flattened and the cap secured to them, forming the head It and securely clamping the button between itself and the neck of the button.
The button is applied to a garment by theuse of a suitable implement and is so securely attached that it can be removed only bycutting it out of the fabric.
The button thus formed is easily attached to a garment, the prongs f f entering and passing through the fabric readily and when separated secure the button to the garment so effectually that the wearer is not annoyed by the loss of buttons.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim is 1. A button provided with means for attaching it to a garment, consisting of a cylindrical neck on the under side of the button, spurs integral with the neck, and extending through the button, a head or cap engaging said spurs and clamping the button between the neck and the head and separable prongs extending below said neck.
2. A button provided with means for attaching it to a garment, consisting of a cylindrical neck under the button, a spur integral with the neck and extending through the button,'a head or cap engaging the spur and the upper side of the button and clamping the button between the neck and the head and separable prongs extending below said neck.
3. A button provided with means for at- 5 taching it to a garment, consisting of a cylindrical neck under the button, a spur integral with the neck and extending through the button, a head or cap engaging the spur and the upper side of the button and clamping the 10 button between the neck and the head and separable prongs extending below said neck,
in combination with a shell having an annular inwardly-projecting flange.
4. A button provided with means for at- I 5 taching it to a garment, consisting of a cylin-
