R. L. COHEN. TRUNK ATTACHMENT.
Patenteaaune 23, 189e.
.f l llllllllllllllllllll Witwe/wao W @if UNITED STATES PATENT OErrcEe ROSALIE L. COHEN, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO.
TRUNK ATTACHMENT.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,759, dated June 23, 1896.
Appleman sea April 10,1896.
To a/ZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROSALIE L. COHEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Trunk Attachments, of which the following is a specication.
My invention relates to attachments for traveling-trunks, and has particular relation to garment-holding attachments therefor.
The objects of my invention are to provide any of the ordinary forms of trunks with improved means for retaining the garments contained therein in desirable relative positions and thereby prevent the mussing and j ost-lin g oi the contents of the trunk from the shocks to which a trunk is ordinarily subject-ed in traveling; to so construct and arrange my improved holding attachments as to admit of their being detached from the trunk when not in use, and produce the same in a simple and inexpensive manner. These objects I accomplish in the manner illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in whichy Figure l is a view in perspective of a portion of a trunk-body, showing my attachments therein. Fig. 2 is a detail view showing a transverse section of one of the attaching` devices and its connection with the trunk. Fig. 3 is a central vertical longitudinal section of a trunk-body having my improvement there in; and Fig. 4 is a plan view of a trunk-body, showing the manner of using said improvement.
Similar letters referto similar parts throughout the several views.
a represents a trunk-body, which may be of any of the ordinary forms, and which has secured to its inner side and end walls at desirable points'vertical guide-strips b, preferably of thin sheet metal. As indicated in the drawings, these guide-strips are substantially C shape in cross-section, or in the form of an oval tube, the outer face of which has formed therein a vertical slotted opening ZJ.
c represents a bar or strip of wood or other suitable material, one of which is adapted, as indicated in the drawings, to fit and slide within each ofthe guide-strips b. The outer face of each of these strips or bars c has secured cen- Serial No. 587,045. (No model.)
trally thereto throughout its length the central portion of a facing-strip cf of suitable fabric. To the outer face of this strip c' are secured transversely, at such intervals as may be desirable, the inner ends of holding tapes or strips e, the latter being of varying lengths, as indicated. The outer end of each of the holding strips or tapes e carries, as indicated in the drawings, a safety-pin or other well-known form of attaching devicef. These pins may, however, be attached to other points on said tapes.
In utilizing my attaching device the bars c, constructed as above described, are inserted vertically into the guide-strips b, and as the garments or other similar articles are packed in the trunk the ends of the tapes e. are, by means of the safety-pins f, attached to said garments at such points as may be convenient and desirable. It will be readily understood that the tapes being of different lengths and arranged at different heights, the dilerent layers of garments or other articles contained in the trunk may in the manner above described be secured against sliding toward the ends or sides of the trunk with the result that the articles contained in said trunk will remain substantially in the posi tions in which they were packed, regardless of the usual rough handling to which trunks are ordinarily subjected in the course of a journey.
It will be observed that when the trunk is not employed in traveling, the bars and the holding-strips which are connected therewith may be readily withdrawn from connection with the trunk. It will also be observed that the nature of my improved garment-holding device is such as to take up comparatively slight room within the trunk and to admit of their being produced in a neat and simple manner at a reasonable cost of manufacture.
Having now fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
l. In an attachment for trunks the combination with a trunk-body, of vertically-ar# ranged detachable strips therein and attaching-tapes c of varying lengths and arranged one above the other, said attaching-tapes IOO having their inner ends connected with said one above the other, said bars adapted t0 fit strip, substantially as and for the purpose and slide Within said guide-strips substanspeeified. tially as and for the purpose specified.
2. In an attachment for trunks the oombi- ROSALIE L. COI-IEN. 5 nation with a trunk-body and Vertical guides In presence ofb arranged therein as described, of bars c and J. WESTLEY FISHER,
attaching-tapes e connected with said bars v C. C. SHEPHERD.
