Description

UNITED STATES PATENT OEEICE.
OTTO F. SEYFARTI-I, OF NEW YORK, N-. Y.
HARNESS-SADDLE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,251, dated J une 16, 1896.
Application filed October 4., 1895. Serial No. 564,634. (No model.)
T0 all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, OTTO F. SEYEARTII, of New York city, in the county and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Harness-Saddles, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This invention relates to improvements in harness-saddles; and the object is to provide a harnessesaddle particularly adapted to soreback horses.
The invention consists in the construction and novel arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter speciied, and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures.
Figure l is a side elevation of a harnesssaddle embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section thereof on the line 2 2 in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section, on an enlarged scale, of a portion of the device on the line 3 3 in Fig. 4; and Fig. 4 is a plan view thereof.
Referring to the drawings, A designates the saddlepads, which may be of any desired construction, and Ais the saddletree, having hinge connection at its ends with the saddlepads. The tree is made of plate metal'and it is curved upward at its central portion to clear the'back of the horse. The check-hook a and the terrets a are secured to the tree. As here shown the shank portions of these parts are extended through holes in the tree, and nuts are engaged on the threaded ends of the shanks. By this construction a broken terret or hook may be easily removed and a new one inserted. To the inner side of the pad-cover a metal plate A2 is secured by rivets. The plate has a transverse slot-opening a2 in it which registers with an opening a3 in the pad-cover.
'dicated at b2.
B is a clip-plate removably secured to the outer side of the saddle-pad by means of screws b, which engage in tapped holes in the plate A2. The upper end of the clip-plate has a loop or hook portion b', designed to engage in the transverse slot a4, in the end of the tree A', so that the saddle-pads may move freely with relation to the tree and thus adapt themselves to varying conditions or girth of horses. From the loop portion b the plate extends inward through the slots as a2 and then upward against the inner side of the plate A2, as in- It will be observed that the portion of the plate B comprising the loop b and portion b2 is reduced in width. The lower end of the clip-plate is provided with a slot b3 through which the thill-strap may pass. The tree A, as before stated, is made of plate or sheet metal, and it may be slightly resilient, so as to yield and make the saddle fit easily on a horse. The plates A2 and B are also of sheet metal and may be stamped out,
which is a much cheaper mechanical operation than casting.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent-- A harness-saddle, comprising saddle-pads, a metal tree having slotted ends, metal plates secured to the inner side of the pads and having slot-openings registering with slots through the pads, clip-plates removably secured to the pads and having hook portions adapted to pass through the several slot-openings and having slot-openings through which straps may pass, terrets detachably secured to the tree, and a checkhook removably secured to the tree, substantially as specied.
OTTO F. SEYFARTH.
