SLATE-CUTTING MACHINE.

SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 562,051, dated June 16, 1896.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, SAMUEL D. VAN PEL",

a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Anderson, in the county of Madison and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Slate-Cutting Machines; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to provide a simple and effective machine for cutting and trimming slate; and the invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts,all as hereinafter described, and pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the accompanying drawings, the letters A A designate two parallel side pieces or cheeks of the frame, which consist of vertically-disposed bars supported at one end by a leg 13 and at the opposite end by the two legs C O. The bars constitute the table of the machine.

The upper end of the leg B passes between the two bars, which are secured thereto by bolts 1). The legs 0 O are connected with said bars by means of bolts 0, which also pass through a spacing-block D, placed between the bars to hold them the proper distance apart. Should it be desired to vary the distance between the bars, additional spacing blocks or washers may be employed. The lower ends of the legs are provided with perforated feet d, and these feet are preferably formed with spurs d, in order to hold the machine on a roof or other place where it may be used.

E designates the knife blade, which is shaped similarly to a shear-blade and is pivotally secured between the bars A A at c. Said knife has a hollow or concaved edge, as best shown in Fig. 3, forming the two sharp cutting edges ff, which grasp and hold the slate firmly while it is being cut. It will also be observed that the upper edges of the bars A A are outwardly beveled, as indicated at a a, to better adapt them to the slate, which is often sprung or hollowed. edges are also preferably convened longitudinall'y or raised gradually from each end toward the center or near the center, which is the highest point. By reason of thispeculiar formation of the blade and of the table it is possible to cut the slate in a true and neat manner without breaking or chipping. The cutter-blade is preferably thickest at the cutting edge, its thickness gradually diminishing toward the upper edge.

One of the bars A is provided with slotted arms G G, which support gages H. Said arms G G are preferably secured to the bar A by means of bolts g, which engage slots g in lugs g of the arms G, whereby the said arms, with the gages, may be readily detached.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is- I 1. In a slate cutting and trimming machine, the combination with a table composed of two parallel bars whose upper edges are outwardly beveled, of a knife-blade pivotally attached to said bars and having a hollow or concaved cutting edge, substantially as specified.

2. In a slate cutting and trimming machine, the combination with a table composed of two parallel bars whose upper edges have lateral and downward bevels and are raised or inclined from each end toward the center, of a pivoted knife-blade connected to said bars and having a hollow .or concaved edge, substantially as specified.

3. In a slate cutting and trimming machine, the frame having the legs B and O, O, and the side bars A, A, secured to said legs, of a cutting-bar having a groove and the two cutting edges, substantially as specified.

4. In a slate cutting and trimming machine, the combination of the table composed of the two edgewise-disposed bars having the inclined upper edges, the legs B and O, C, to which said bars are secured, said legs having spurred feet, the pivoted cutter-bar having the concaved cut-ting edge, and the gages attached to one of said bars, substantially as specified.
