AN DREW 5.6RAHAM. PHUTO'LI'THU.WASHINGTDN.D.C,
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
GEORGE J. KING, OF OAKLAND, CALIFORNIA.
ELECTRICAL ANNUNCIATOR.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 560,358, dated May 19, 1896.
Application filed November 21, 1895. Serial No. 569,708. (No model.)
To all whom, it may concern.-
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oakland, in the county of Alameda and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrical Annunciators; and I do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact description of the invention,
such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to electrical annunciators.
The object of the invention is to provide a device of this character by means of which the guests of a hotel may communicate with the clerk and by means of which the clerk may notify the guests that their messages have been received.
IVith this object in view the invention consists of certain features of construction and combination of parts, which will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of my improved annunciator, showing the parts set. Fig.2 is a similar view showing the position the parts assume after the indicator has been actuated.
In the drawings, 1 denotes a box or casing having a face-board 2, which is separated from the front of said casing, provided with apertures 3, through which the indicators are adapted to slide and be displayed. Secured to the front of the casing is a frame 4, which supports two electromagnets 5 and an armature (5, provided with a detent 7.
8 denotes the slide-bar, which is mounted in said frame and projects through the front of the casing and has secured to its forward end an indicator 9, which projects through the apertures in the face-board of the casing. A bell-crank lever 10 is pivoted to the rear end of the frame and has one of its ends slotted to engage a laterally-projecting pin 11, projecting from the rear end of the sliding bar 8. The other end of this lever is provided with a weight 12, which has a screw-threaded adjustment thereon to increase the amount of leverage.
13 denotes the circuit-wires, which lead to a battery. It is evident that when the circuit is completed and the armature attracted to its magnets the slide-bar will be projected forward by the weighted lever and thus thrust the indicator through the faceboard and display to the clerk the number of the room from which the call is made. To inform the guest that the message has been received, I have provided a simple means, which consists of two spring-contacts 14: and 15, respectively provided with battery-wires 16. When the clerk receives the message and sets the annunciator, the annunciator striking against one of these spring-contacts will force it against the other, thereby ringing an alarm in the guests room, thus notifying him that his message has been received. This message will only be momentary, as the normal position of the slide-bar and indicator is such that the two spring-contacts are out of connection, but are brought into connection when the indicator is thrust inward by the clerk. As soon as he removes the pressure from the indicator the weighted lever will throw the slide-bar forward, so as to bring its dog in engagement with the detent of the armature. This is clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In an annunciator, the combination with electromagnets and their armature, said armature being provided with a detent, of a slide-bar provided at one end with an indicator and further provided with adog to engage said detent, and means for projecting the slide-bar and its indicator forward when the armature is attracted by the electromagnets, said means consisting of a pivoted lever connected with the slide-bar and provided with an adjustable weight substantially as set forth.
.2. In an annunciator, the combination with electromagnets and their armature, provided with a detent, of a slide-bar provided at one end with an indicator and provided with a dog to engage the detent, spring-contacts connected with an alarm or indicator and within the path of movement of the first-named indicator, and means for projecting the firstnanied indicator forward to display the same, whereby when said indicator is retracted or reset, it contacts with the spring-contacts and 10 sounds an alarm or displays the signal, substantially as set forth.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses GEORGE J. KING.
